Star Wars IX: The Rise of Skywalker (2019) review: Deserves the hate?

As people are dedicated to reviewing and criticizing films it is quite natural that - when analyzing a work - we always seek to take a position inversely proportional to that which abounds in the majority, this sometimes involves trying to understand why certain films are loved and why certain films are hated, to see if indeed the public is right.

When it comes to Star Wars things get quite complicated, because apparently it is impossible to create a piece within its universe beyond the original trilogy that leaves its fans satisfied, it seems that not even they understand what makes a movie of Star Wars be good.

And the irony is that a desire for complacency was the main reason why Star Wars Episode IX: The rise of Skywalker is a dismal failure in my opinion.

Although J.J Abrams delivers a visually striking film full of good times, it is difficult to ignore the large amount of inconsistencies in Rise of Skywalker, as well as the lack of respect for the sequel trilogy and more specifically The Last Jedi.

The Last Jedi was a polarizing film (At best), but we must admit with hand on heart that at least it had its own identity and many interesting ideas that land with more or less success. In contrast to this Rise Skywalker follows the safe path, the path of cliché and fan service ... the latter ends up backfire.

Although on paper his ideas would satisfy any follower of the saga, in terms of execution the way of doing things leaves much to be desired, although it can be described as exciting it also feels cheap, as if we had reached the end of the trip without any merit. and all the plots that were established in the two previous tapes did not end in anything.

Rise of Skywalker is extremely competent at first viewing, but the passage of time does nothing but hurt our hearts more and more, it will be able to have great music, category actors and impressive special effects (practical and digital), but in the thematic department and plot leaves much to be desired.

I emphasize that Kylo manages to close his story arc (And it stands as one of the best factors of the entire trilogy) but in general terms the negative will always outweigh the positive.

I insist, not everything is bad, it is easy to see that it was a film made with love and the closure of a story that has expanded for so long is not easy to address, but the feeling is bittersweet even for the most optimistic of followers.

The forced return of Palpatine, the retreat of Rey's origin, the constant deux ex machina so that the whole plot works without much turning, are very difficult defects to ignore.

I recommend it? If you are a fan of Star Wars of course you have already seen them a couple of times, but otherwise, it is an essential blockbuster that does nothing more than make us miss simpler and better times.

Como gente se dedica a reseñar y criticar cine es bastante natural que - al analizar una obra - siempre busquemos tomar una postura inversamente proporcional a aquella que abunda en la mayorías, esto a veces supone tratar de entender por qué ciertas películas son amadas y por qué ciertas películas son odiadas, para ver si efectivamente el público tiene razón.

Cuando se trata de Star Wars la cosa se complica bastante, porque aparentemente es imposible crear una pieza dentro de su universo más allá de la trilogía original que deje a sus admiradores satisfechos, pareciera que ni ellos entienden que es lo que hace que una película de Star Wars sea buena.

Y lo irónico es que un deseo de complacencia fue la razón principal por la que a mi parecer Star Wars Episode IX: The rise of Skywalker es un fracaso estrepitoso.

Aunque J.J Abrams nos entrega una cinta visualmente impactante y plagada de buenos momentos, es difícil ignorar la gran cantidad de incoherencias de Rise of Skywalker, asi como la falta de respeto a la trilogía de las secuelas y más específicamente a The Last Jedi.

The Last Jedi fue una cinta polarizante (En el mejor de los casos), pero debemos admitir con la mano en el corazón que al menos tenía una identidad propia y muchas ideas interesantes que aterrizan con más o menos éxito. En contraposición a esto Rise Skywalker sigue el camino seguro, la vía del cliché y el fan service… esto último termina backfireando.

Aunque en papel sus ideas dejarían satisfecho a cualquier seguidor de la saga, en términos de ejecución la forma de hacer las cosas deja mucho que desear, aunque puede describirse como emocionante también se siente barata, como si hubiésemos llegado al final del viaje sin mérito alguno y todas las tramas que se establecieron en las dos cintas previas no concluyeron en nada.

Rise of Skywalker es extremadamente competente en un primer visionado, pero El Paso del tiempo no hace más que herir más y más nuestros corazones, podrá tener música genial, actores de categorías y efectos especiales (prácticos y digitales) impresionantes, pero en el departamento temático y argumental deja muchísimo que desear.

Destaco que Kylo logra cerrar su arco argumental (Y se erige como uno de los mejores factores de toda la trilogía) pero en términos generales lo negativo siempre va a sobrepasar lo positivo.

Insisto, no todo es malo, es fácil ver que fue una película hecha con amor y el cierre de una historia que se ha expandido durante tanto tiempo no es nada fácil de abordar, pero el sentimiento es agridulce incluso para el más optimista de los seguidores.

El regreso forzado de Palpatine, el retcon del origen de Rey los constantes deux ex machina para que toda la trama funcione sin dar muchas vueltas son defectos muy difíciles de ignorar.

¿La recomiendo? Si eres un seguidor de Star Wars por supuesto ya las has visto un par de veces, pero de lo contrario, es un blockbuster imprescindible que no hace más que hacernos extrañar tiempos más simples y mejores.
