I have always enjoyed films that seem to be obsessed with their own medium, the world of cinema is one full of interesting elements in front of and behind the camera that have an invaluable potential to tell interesting stories, we have seen it both in independent products such as the excellent one " Be Kind Rewind ”as in works that with just a couple of years are already classics of contemporary art (Like Once Upon a Time in Hollywood).
In objective terms The Comeback Trail is a beast of the same ilk, with the peculiarity that after studying it in depth it ends up being a slightly more mediocre product, although its intentions are respectable.
It is no secret to anyone that cinema has changed, our world lives obsessed with inclusion but simultaneously loses new discriminations ... this situation has led great stars of the late twentieth century to find a place in a slightly "cheaper" portion of the seventh art.
Although it is an absolutely respectable and logical decision, it is curious to see stars of the stature of Robert DeNiro, Tommy Lee Jones or Morgan Freeman himself (I already mentioned it in Going in Style) in low-budget films with little or nothing remarkable.
On the one hand I understand it perfectly, these gentlemen had spent decades giving away work of art after work of art and eventually they had to rest, here the problem is when we stop seeing these films as a break and we analyze them more as a series of missed opportunities .
Let's go back to the beginning, Comeback Trail is a film from 2021, directed by George Gallo and starring the trio I just mentioned… There we follow the story of Max Barber, a film producer who is quite in debt, decides to make a film with the simple purpose of killing the main star to collect insurance.
Let's just say the premise is simple and fun but the movie suffers trying to maintain it, having quite a bit of tonal inconsistency and dancing between black comedy and goofy comedy without much sense. The comeback trail has so much potential and it does little to exploit it, drowning in its own mediocrity.
I totally highlight the performance of tommy Lee Jones, who knew how to focus much more on his role than the other stars.
Anyway, the direction is anything, his script is nothing special and there are few notable aspects. I would recommend it to entertain yourself for a while but there are better options, both in pretentious and silly cinema.
