Since I recently managed to catch up on several of the series that I had pending, I thought it was a perfect opportunity to add one or another new project to the list, especially if I consider that with the completion of Malcolm in the Middle I felt a little empty. and I was desperately looking for a comedy to entertain myself.
You see, I have always thought that the vision of comedies as those series that should only "make you laugh" is extremely simplistic, and ignores several of the difficulties that projects within this genre must face, starting from the establishment of a group of characters interesting primary and secondary, as well as the use of a premise that leads to many situations where they can exploit their full humorous and narrative potential.
The irony of the whole thing? In the end, it all comes down to a leap of faith, since beyond a brief synopsis and having seen a couple of clips on the internet, we will rarely know if we will enjoy a sitcom until we have seen several of its episodes, and in some cases this extends to entire seasons.
In the case of The Good Place, it is not exactly difficult to make the decision to see it, considering that it has a fascinating premise and several characters with the potential to win our hearts quickly.
You see, the Good Place is a mixture of comedy and science fiction, where we are shown the hypothetical world where good people go after they die, a place that, although it is not classified as "heaven", does share several of the characteristics that all the religions of the world usually expect from him.
In this way we are introduced to our protagonist: Eleanor, a girl with questionable morals who has come to this place by mistake and will do everything possible to stay in the good place, whatever it takes.
Although our first minutes in the good place are invested intelligently trying to understand how this paradise works (From minimal details such as the home of each of its members as well as the scoring system that allows the best human beings to get there) , while we are connecting with the conflicts of all the protagonists.
Without needing to connect to any specific religion, The Good Place uses its creative reality to generate fascinating conflicts, introducing elements of fantasy into a traditional sitcom in clever ways.
The question is: Will it be able to keep our interest beyond the first season? These are the kind of answers that only time can give us, meanwhile we can't do more than acknowledge that it has managed things well, finding harmony between episodic plots and moderate continuity, and expanding the backstory of its iconic protagonists.
Cómo recientemente logré ponerme al día con varias de las series que tenía pendientes, pensé en que era una oportunidad perfecta para añadir uno que otro nuevo proyecto a la lista, especialmente si considero que con la finalización de Malcom in the Middle me sentía un poco vacío y estaba buscando desesperadamente una comedia para entretenerme.
Verán, siempre he pensado que la visión de las comedias como aquellas series que solo deben "hacerte reír" es extremadamente simplista, e ignora varias de las dificultades que los proyectos dentro de este género deben afrontar, partiendo desde el establecimiento de un grupo de personajes primarios y secundarios interesantes, así como el uso de una premisa que de pie a muchas situaciones en dónde puedan explotar todo su potencial humorístico y narrativo.
¿Lo irónico de todo el asunto? Al final todo se reduce a un salto de fé, puesto que más allá de una breve sinopsis y haber visto un par de clips en internet, raramente sabremos si disfrutaremos una sitcom hasta el momento en que hayamos visto varios de sus episodios, y en algunos casos esto se extiende a temporadas enteras.
En el caso de The Good Place no es precisamente difícil tomar la decisión de verla, considerando que cuenta con una premisa fascinante y varios personajes con potencial de ganarse nuestros corazones rápidamente.
Verán, the Good Place es una mezcla de comedia y ciencia ficción, en dónde se nos muestra el mundo hipotético al que van las personas buenas luego de morir, un lugar que aunque no se cataloga como el "cielo" si comparte varias de las características que todas las religiones del mundo suelen esperar de el.
De esta forma se nos introduce a nuestra protagonista: Eleanor, una chica de moral cuestionable que ha llegado a este lugar por error y hará lo posible por mantenerse en el good place, cueste lo que cueste.
Aunque nuestros primeros minutos en the good place se invierten inteligente mente tratando de comprender como funciona este paraíso (Desde detalles mínimos como el hogar de cada uno de sus miembros así como el sistema de puntuación que le permite a los seres humanos más buenos llegar ahí), mientras que vamos conectando con los conflictos de todos los protagonistas.
Sin necesidad de conectar con alguna religión específica, The Good Place usa su realidad creativa para generar conflictos fascinantes, introduciendo elementos fantasiosos en una sitcom tradicional de maneras muy ingeniosas.
La pregunta es: ¿Más allá de la primera temporada podrá mantener nuestro interés? Ese son el tipo de respuestas que solo puede brindarnos el tiempo, mientras tanto no podemos hacer más que reconocer que ha sabido manejar las cosas bien, encontrando armonía entre las tramas episódicas y la continuidad moderada, y expandiendo la backstory de sus iconicos protagonistas.
