With so many superhero movies year after year it is a bit easy to lose perspective of those that really made an impact, for me, the Batman trilogy created by Nolan broke all barriers, and even after giants like Endgame or the recent Justice League By Snyder, few films manage to alter the entire pop culture landscape so much.
The Dark Knight opened the eyes of Hollywood, it demonstrated a precise mix between maturity and comic influences, without falling into the "edgyness" that poisoned a large part of the films that arrived in the early 2000s as Daredevil or Blade, a testament to the possibility of adapting and taking creative liberties in an organic way, without disrespecting the origins of his work.
Take Heath Ledger's Joker - For example -, a character that has been talked about ad nauseam since the premiere of this film in 2008, a mixture of both aesthetic and narrative influences, Ledger takes a bit of everything, Hamill, Romero, Nicholson , the works of Alan Moore and Brian Azzarello ... Shrouded in an uncertainty, the Joker is a solid character, who operates perfectly within the logic of the work in which he exists.
Although this is the most striking case, that same set of rules applies to every aspect of the film, including Gotham itself (Cast using the streets of Chicago) and each character, main and secondary.
Nolan and Batman are an unlikely but perfect combination, a lightning bolt in a bottle that manages to trap us for more than two hours without any problem, where each line is worth gold, each situation is perfectly constructed, where its comic nature never limits the capabilities to tell a mature and capable story that not only tells us about facts, actions and omissions, but also about feelings. A passage into the psyche of Bruce Wayne, a character who can easily fall into the formulaic, but in the right hands can offer too much.
I have always been surprised by the way in which The Dark Knight withstood the passage of time, how it works in isolation and how many who came later tried to imitate it (and failed in the attempt), even Warner / DC was unable to repeat its own formula.
Christian Bale, Gary Oldman, Magy Gyllenhaal, Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman and Heath Ledger all work magic together and in the hands of Christopher Nolan they take things to the next level.
There may be hundreds of superhero movies year after year, they can reinvent Batman as many times as they want, they can try to replicate Nolan's realism all they want, but they will never reach the perfection of The Dark Knight, a work that came at the perfect time. and it changed the whole landscape, one of the cornerstones of modern superhero cinema. A work so particular that it could be called "auteur cinema", in cinema, there is one before The Dark Kniht, and one after The Dark Knight.
Con tantas películas de superheroes año tras año es un poco fácil perder la perspectiva de aquellas que realmente causaron un impacto, para mi, la trilogía de Batman creado por Nolan rompió toda las barreras, y aún luego de gigantes como Endgame o la reciente Justice League de Snyder, pocas películas logran alterar tanto todo el panorama de la cultura pop.
The Dark Knight le abrió los ojos a Hollywood, demostró una mezcla precisa entre madurez e influencias del cómic, sin caer en la "edgyness" que envenenaron gran parte de las cintas que llegaron a principios del 2000 como Daredevil o Blade, un testamento a la posibilidad de adaptar y tomarse libertades creativas de forma orgánica, sin irrespetar los orígenes de su obra.
Tomemos el Joker de Heath Ledger - Por ejemplo -, personaje del que se ha hablado hasta el cansancio desde el estreno de esta película en 2008, una mezcla de influencias tanto estéticas como narrativas, Ledger toma de todo un poco, Hamill, Romero, Nicholson, las obras de Alan Moore y Brian Azzarello... Cubierto de una incertidumbre, el Joker es un personaje sólido, que opera perfectamente dentro de la lógica de la obra en la que existe.
Aunque este es el caso más llamativo, ese mismo set de reglas aplica para cada aspecto de la cinta, incluso la propia Gotham (Moldeada usando las calles de Chicago) y cada personaje, principal y secundario.
Nolan y Batman son una combinación improbable pero perfecta, un relámpago en una botella que logra atraparnos durante más de dos horas sin problema alguno, en donde cada linea vale oro, cada situación esta perfectamente construída, donde su naturaleza de cómic nunca limita las capacidades para contar una historia madura y llena de capaz, que no solo nos habla de hechos, acciones y omisiones, sino de sentimientos. Un pasaje a la psique de Bruce Wayne, un personaje que fácilmente puede caer en lo formulaíco, pero que en las manos correctas puede ofrecer demasiado.
Siempre me ha sorprendido la forma en que The Dark Knight soportó el paso del tiempo, como funciona aisladamente y tantos que vinieron después intentaron imitara (Y fracasaron en el intento), hasta la misma Warner/DC fue incapaz de repetir su propia formula.
Christian Bale, Gary Oldman, Magy Gyllenhaal, Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman y Heath Ledger, todos hacen magia juntos y en manos de Christopher Nolan llevan las cosas al siguiente nivel.
Podrán existir cientos de películas de superheroes año tras año, podrán reinventar Batman las veces que quieran, podrán tratar de replicar el realismo de Nolan todo lo que quieran, pero nunca alcanzarán la perfección de The Dark Knight, una obra que llegó en el momento perfecto y cambió todo el panorama, una de las piedras angulares del cine de superheroes moderno. Una obra tan particular que podría llamarse "cine de autor", en cine, existe un antes de The Dark Kniht, y un después de The Dark Knight.
