The Many Saints of Newark (2021) review: A worthy prequel.

Whenever I see movies or series about which I feel a lot of hype, it is inevitable to put myself in a conflictive situation, should I expose my thoughts about it right after watching it or should I wait to have a cool head? After finishing Many Saints of Newark, the highly anticipated film that serves as a prequel to The Sopranos, I felt this conflict, although in the end I decided to opt for the first of these options, having the events of the film quite fresh in my head.

Directed by Alan Taylor and written by David Chase (Director of several episodes of the series and the creator of the same, respectively) The Many Saints Of Newark was in a rather strange limbo since its announcement, where on the one hand we had a fear Immeasurable that the legacy of the Sopranos was affected, but at the same time we felt that it would be a story worthy of one of the greatest contemporary series that has existed.

We fans can rest easy, as the result is a fairly entertaining film that organically expands the Soprano universe, delivers tons of beautiful takes and a couple of surprisingly emotional moments. But we go step by step.

In The Many Saints of Newark the main focus is not on Tony Soprano, but on the character of Dickie Moltisanti, father of Christopher Moltisanti, throughout the 60s.

This setting serves as a background to host various new and familiar faces at an early point in their lives, all presented in a way thanks to a very well chosen cast. Alessandro Nivola heads the project as Dickie Moltisanti, Jon Bernthal as Jonny Soprano and Michael Gandolfini (Son of James Gandolfini) repeating the iconic role of his father as Tony.

The cast never stops surprising us with their ability to mimic their former counterparts, actors such as Corey Stoll, Vera Farmiga and Rob Colleti deliver spectacular performances in their limited screen time. It is greatly appreciated that Ray Liotta coexists among them, whose performance in Goodfellas originally inspired the series (thus closing the gangster circle).

The Many Saints of Newark serves as a love letter to the Soprano universe and the references to the series will be constant, that is, always put with total care so that nothing feels forced.

Perhaps the biggest problem with the film is its lack of ability to be properly focused, the conflict is not always totally clear and it is easy for it to lose a beat from time to time.

However, this does not affect the ability of Many Saints to extend the story of The Sopranos in a very interesting way, making us empathize with characters that we have known for years and resolving doubts that we may have in a natural way.

It is far from being a masterpiece, it is not even within the confines of its genre, but it is a worthy successor to a series as great as The Sopranos, it works on so many levels and I am glad that Gandolfini's legacy was not tarnished.

Siempre que veo películas o series sobre las cuales siento muchísimo hype es inevitable ponerme en una situación conflictiva, ¿Debería exponer mis pensamientos al respecto justo después de verla o debería esperar a tener la cabeza fría? Luego de terminar Many Saints of Newark, la muy esperada película que sirve como precuela a The Sopranos, sentí dicho conflicto, aunque al final decidiera decantarme por la primera de estas opciones, teniendo los eventos del film bastante frescos en mi cabeza.

Dirigida por Alan Taylor y escrita por David Chase (Director de varios episodios de la serie y el creador de la misma, respectivamente) The Many Saints Of Newark se encontraba en un limbo bastante extraño desde su anuncio, en donde por un lado teníamos un miedo inmensurable de que el legado de los Soprano se viera afectado, pero al mismo tiempo sentíamos que sería una historia digna de una de las series contemporáneas mas grandes que ha existido.

Los fans podemos estar tranquilos, ya que el resultado es una cinta bastante entretenida que expande el universo Soprano de forma orgánica, entrega muchísimas tomas hermosas y un par de momentos sorpresivamente emocionales. Pero vamos paso por paso.

En The Many Saints of Newark el enfoque principal no esta en Tony Soprano, sino en el personaje de Dickie Moltisanti, padre de Christopher Moltisanti, a lo largo de los años 60s.

Este setting sirve como un background para albergar varios caras nuevas y conocidas en un momento temprano de sus vidas, todas presentadas de manera gracias a un cast muy bien escogido. Alessandro Nivola encabeza el proyecto como Dickie Moltisanti, Jon Bernthal como Jonny Soprano y Michael Gandolfini (Hijo de James Gandolfini) repitiendo el icónico rol de su padre como Tony.

El elenco no para de sorprendernos con su habilidad para mimicar a sus antiguas contrapartes, actores como Corey Stoll, Vera Farmiga y Rob Colleti entregan performances espectaculares en su escaso tiempo en pantalla. Se agradece muchísimo que entre ellos conviva Ray Liotta, cuyo performance en Goodfellas inspiró a la serie originalmente (cerrando así el círculo gangster).

The Many Saints of Newark sirve como una carta de amor al universo de los Soprano y las referencias a la serie van a ser constantes, eso si, siempre puestas con total cuidado para que nada se sienta forzado.

Quizá el mayor problema de la película es su falta de capacidad para estar debidamente enfocada, el conflicto no siempre es totalmente claro y es fácil que de vez en cuando pierda el ritmo.

No obstante, esto no afecta la capacidad de Many Saints para extender la historia de Los Soprano en una forma interesantísima, haciendo que tomemos empatía por personajes que llevábamos años conociendo y resolviendo las dudas que pudiésemos tener de forma natural.

Dista de ser una obra de arte, ni siquiera lo es dentro de los confines de su género, pero es una sucesora digna de una serie tan grandiosa como Los Soprano, funciona en muchísimos niveles y me alegra que el legado de Gandolfini no se viera manchado.
