The Mitchells VS The Machines (2021) review: Sony Pictures Animation did it again.

On second thought these last years have been at least in general terms quite good for animation cinema, not only studios like Pixar and Dreamworks keep creating quality products in a consistent way, but we have much more variety from other places.

For me, for example, Spiderman Into The Spider-Verse marked a before and after, not only because Sony Pictures Animation took its artistic plane to another level, but because it was shown that with effort the hegemony that Disney established from the beginning could be broken of the century, approaching the environment from a new and refreshing angle.

The Mitchells vs The Machines was produced by this same studio and acquired by Netflix in 2021, and although it does not meet the same quality of the spider man film, it also has many good things to offer.

The Mitchells vs The Machines is first of all an extremely competent film with a striking visual style, which not only plays within a less romantic plane than usual, but takes full advantage of this to tell a story that mostly manages to be very nice.

Here we follow the story of a road trip by the Mitchell family, who must leave her daughter Katy, an aspiring filmmaker at the California Film School, to which she was admitted. We quickly discovered that although at first she used to be very close to her father, in the end the generation gap ended up distancing them, Rick, her father, sees this as an opportunity for both of them to reconnect.

If I had to mention the biggest flaw of the film it would be the lack of notion of how the digital world works, although it is pretentious to look for realism in an animated film that (Spoiler) takes place mostly in an apocalyptic and cartoonish environment, many times it is uncomfortable the taste it leaves in your mouth, it's as if someone which is from two or three generations ago was to blame for creating this story.

For us, who could well define ourselves as late millennials or early generation Z, the rather boomer nature of the film can lead us to roll our eyes very easily.

Not everything is negative, just as there are many mistakes there are also many achievements, his humor for example is quite effective and when he stays away from the digital plane it works very well.

The best thing about the film is its way of presenting chaos, a subject with which any member of the family can easily relate to.

From the technical point of view, it is a very good film, the animation is beautiful (the best I've seen at Sony) and the performances are fun, although it has a series of gags that we know will not withstand The Passage of time is a film entertaining and moving.

Far from being perfect, The Mitchells vs The Machines is effective in transmitting its messages and although it feels too boomer it also draws attention to real problems that our dependence on technology is causing, the thing is to take everything with a little humor and accept their mistakes.

Pensándolo bien estos últimos han años han sido al menos en términos generales bastante buenos para el cine de animación, no solo estudios como Pixar y Dreamworks se mantienen creando de forma consistente productos de calidad, sino que tenemos mucha más variedad de parte de otros lugares.

Para mi, por ejemplo, Spiderman Into The Spider-Verse marcó un antes y un después, no solo porque Sony Pictures Animation llevó su plano artístico a otro nivel, sino porque se demostró que con esfuerzo podía romperse la hegemonía que Disney instauró desde el principio del siglo, abordando el medio desde un ángulo nuevo y refrescante.**

The Mitchells vs The Machines fue producida por este mismo estudio y adquirida por Netflix en 2021, y si bien no cumple con la misma calidad de la cinta del hombre arácnido también tiene muchísimas cosas buenas que ofrecer.

The Mitchells vs The Machines es en primer lugar una cinta extremadamente competente con un impactante estilo visual, que no solo juega dentro de un plano menos romántico de lo usual, sino que aprovecha totalmente esto para narrar una historia que en su mayoría logra ser muy innovadora.

Aquí seguimos la historia de un road-trip de la familia Mitchell, quienes deben dejar a su hija Katy, una aspirante a cineasta en la escuela de Cine de California, a la que fue admitida. Rápidamente descubrimos que aunque en principio ella solía ser muy unida a su padre, al final la brecha generacional los terminó distanciando, Rick, su padre, ve esto como una oportunidad para que ambos reconecten.

Si tuviese que mencionar la falla más grande de la película sería la falta de nocion de cómo funciona el mundo digital, aunque es pretencioso buscar realismo en una cinta animada que (Spoiler) se desarrolla mayormente en un ambiente apocalíptico y caricaturesco, muchas veces es incómodo el sabor que deja en la boca, es como si alguien de unas dos o tres generaciones más atrás fue el culpable de crear esta historia.

Para nosotros, que bien podríamos definirnos como late millenials o early generation Z, la naturaleza más bien boomer de la cinta puede llevarnos a poner los ojos en blanco con mucha facilidad.

No todo es negativo, así como hay muchos desaciertos también hay muchos logros, su humor por ejemplo es bastante efectivo y cuando se mantiene alejado del plano digital funciona muy bien.

Lo mejor de la cinta es su forma de presentar el caos, un tema con el que cualquier miembro de familia puede sentirse identificado con extrema facilidad.

Desde lo técnico se trata de una película muy buena, la animación es hermosa (De lo mejor que he visto en Sony) y las actuaciones son divertidas, aunque tiene una serie de gags que sabemos no van a soportar El Paso del tiempo es una cinta entretenida y conmovedora.

Lejos de ser perfecta The Mitchells vs The Machines es efectiva en transmitir sus mensajes y aunque se sienta demasiado boomer también pone la atención en problemas reales que nuestra dependencia en la tecnología están causando, la cosa es tomar todo con un poco de humor y aceptar sus errores.
