The Queen’s Gambit (2020) review: When Netflix does things right.

When I think of Netflix unfortunately I associate it more with quantity than quality, it seems that its biggest exclusives are works constructed in a manipulative way to attract crowds that do not care too much about having a true artistic nature, of course exceptions have arisen over time , from the very great House Of Cards in its first seasons, to series like Bojack Horseman that totally broke the conventions of what can be done with an animated series, while in between we have had very interesting projects such as Making a Murderer or Maniac, in a sea of ​​mediocrity, these series and documentaries stand out as triumphant.

The point is that when I think of pure quality, Netflix - as a production house - does not usually deliver that all the time and those gems that I mentioned are rather the exception to the rule.

My point is that The Queen's Gambit is quite an unusual product and represents all the decisions that I would love for Netflix to make with each of its original series, written and directed by Scott Frank and starring the most excellent Anya Taylor-Joy (Who's Who? series contributed to finish catapult to fame), it is a period drama set in the 50s and 60s that follows the story of Beth Harmon, an orphan girl who turns out to be a chess prodigy and ends up triumphing around the world .

Queen’s Gambit has an effective premise and develops it beautifully, consisting of one of the best-produced Netflix series to date, with impressive sets and a mix of practical and computer effects, there is not a single shot that is not great.

For the latter, the performances are the icing on the cake, mostly made up of a young cast with actors like Harry Melling and Jacob Fortune-Lloyd giving their best.

The Queen’s Gambit is elegance and chaos in equal amounts, brilliant and extremely contained. It takes advantage of its short duration - A mini series with 7 chapters of about an hour - with little desire to spread the gum for more than one season.

Each episode is quite measured and has a clear objective, which demonstrates an artistic approach that many other series currently lack.

For many it may seem silly to call it the best if we consider that there are other larger scale productions such as Sense 8 or the now defunct series with Marvel as partners, but there is something in the mix of everything that I have previously mentioned that makes Queens Gambit a extremely tidy series, a work of art that deserves all the awards it won and uses its format to its advantage.

Sometimes it seems that the golden age of television that we say we are in is beginning to be left behind, but jewels of this caliber come to reaffirm the opposite.

Emotionally intelligent and very successful in the way it represents the era in which it takes place, The Queen’s Gambit plays in the big leagues and of course I totally recommend it.

Cuando pienso en Netflix lamentablemente la asocio más con cantidad que con calidad, pareciera que sus más grandes exclusivos son obras construidas de forma manipuladora para atraer multitudes que no se preocupan demasiado por tener una verdadera naturaleza artística, por supuesto con transcurso del tiempo han surgido excepciones, desde la grandísima House Of Cards en sus primeras temporadas, hasta series como Bojack Horseman que qué quebraban totalmente las convenciones de qué se puede hacer con una serie animada, mientras que en el medio hemos tenido proyectos interesantísimos como Making a Murderer o Maniac, en un mar de mediocridad, estas series y documentales se erigen como triunfadoras.

La cuestión es que cuando pienso en calidad pura, Netflix - Como casa productora - no suele entregar eso todo el tiempo y esas joyas que mencioné son más bien la excepción a la regla.

Mi punto es que The Queen’s Gambit es un producto bastante inusual y representa todas las decisiones que me encantaría que Netflix tomara con cada una de sus series originales, escrita y dirigida por Scott Frank y protagonizada por la excelentísima Anya Taylor-Joy (A quien esta serie contribuyó a terminar de catapultar a la fama), se trata de un drama de época ubicada en los años 50s y 60s que sigue la historia de Beth Harmon, una chica huérfana que resulta ser un prodigio del ajedrez y termina triunfando en todo el mundo.

Queen’s Gambit tiene una premisa efectiva y la desarrolla de forma estupenda, consistiendo en una de las series de Netflix mejor producidas hasta la fecha, con sets impresionantes y una mezcla de efectos prácticos y por computadora, no existe un solo plano que no sea estupendo.

Para esto último, las actuaciones son la cereza del pastel, compuesto en su mayoría por un cast joven con actores como Harry Melling y Jacob Fortune-Lloyd que entregan lo mejor de sí mismos.

The Queen’s Gambit es elegancia y caos en cantidades iguales, brillante y extremadamente contenida. Hace provecho de su corta duración - Una mini serie con 7 capítulos de más o menos una hora - con pocos ánimos de estirar el chicle más de una temporada.

Cada episodio está bastante medido y tiene un objetivo claro, lo cual demuestra un enfoque artístico del que muchas otras series en la actualidad carecen.

Para muchos quizá parezca tonto llamarla como la mejor si consideramos que existen otras producciones de mayor escala como Sense 8 o las ahora difuntas series con Marvel como asociados, pero existe algo en la mezcla de todo lo que he mencionado previamente que hace de Queens Gambit una serie extremadamente prolija, una obra de arte que merece todos los premios que obtuvo y aprovecha su formato a su favor.

A veces pareciera que la era de oro de la televisión en la que decimos estar se está empezando a quedar atrás, pero joyas de este calibre vienen a reafirmar lo contrario.

Emocionalmente inteligente y muy acertada en la forma que representa la época en donde transcurre, The Queen’s Gambit juega en las grandes ligas y por supuesto la recomiendo totalmente.
