The Suicide Squad (2021): The crazy side of DC at his best.

Although I am not the biggest fan of DC, I must admit that for some years the position in which they are in terms of live-action cinema has caught my attention, it seems that it marks the days of disastrous films like Batman V Superman or the original Suicide Squad that delivered decaffeinated experiences are long gone and their failures have given way to a more fun take on today.

The examples are varied: The Joker gave us a surprisingly artistic take on the character (I didn't really enjoy it, tastes are tastes though), Birds of Prey felt empowering and toxic in a good way, and the Snyder Cut has already been released (Troubled large but much more integrity than the original version). Continuing with this good streak comes “The Suicide Squad”, in a reboot half in the hands of James Gunn - Well known for directing the Guardians Of The Galaxy films at Marvel and being involved in a couple of controversies that caused his dismissal at the time - to fix all the flaws in the previous movie.

This premise ends up resulting in a much more authentic and fun film, which although it is not without its flaws, feels a little more comfortable with itself.

Uninhibited, violent and visually attractive, Gunn gives us a film that opens with one of the most impressive sequences of the modern blockbuster, not so much in terms of scale but because of the chaotic presentation ... and from then on humor and tragedy go to be very well balanced, always at the hands of the show.

The cast, which in part rejects characters already established in the DCEU (Although it shows little interest in respecting the canon), is nourished by actors such as John Cena, Idris Elba, Marggot Robbie and other more secondary but memorable such as Pete Davidson or Taika Waititi.

In my opinion, the lowest moment of the film is the second act, which takes too long and repeats the same story beats in a somewhat tedious way, although a couple of moments of character development save the experience.

The visually appealing and substantially boring climax offers exactly what I was looking for, a show that puts those characters who earned our laughter and love in entertaining positions.

In general? A good blockbuster that mixes generic elements with a couple of big surprises is nothing to write home about, but it doesn't pretend to be either. Calling it one of the biggest movies of 2021 may be an exaggeration, but you have to take into account that lately it is not exactly that they abound.

I recommend The Suicide Squad for those looking for a fun time although I totally understand if the middle portion is tedious.

Aunque disto de ser el mayor fan de DC debo admitir que desde hace algunos años me llama muchísimo la atención la posición en la que se encuentran en términos de cine live-action, pareciera que como marca los días de filmes desastrosos como Batman V Superman o la original Suicide Squad que entregaban experiencias descafeinadas han quedado atrás y sus fracasos han dado paso a una visión más divertida en la actualidad.

Los ejemplos son variados: The Joker nos entregaba una visión sorprendentemente artística del personaje (Aunque no la disfruté del todo, gustos son gustos), Birds of Prey se sentía empoderante y tóxica en el buen sentido y el Snyder Cut ya se estrenó (Con problemas grandes pero mucha más integridad que la versión original). Siguiendo con esta buena racha llega “The Suicide Squad”, en reboot a medias en manos de James Gunn - Bastante conocido por dirigir las cintas de Guardians Of The Galaxy en Marvel y estar envuelto en un par de polémicas que causaron su despido en su momento - que a solucionar todas las fallas de la película anterior.

Esta premisa termina resultando en una película mucho más auténtica y divertida, que aunque no se encuentra exenta de fallas se siente un poco más cómoda con si misma.

Desinhibida, violenta y visualmente atractiva, Gunn nos entrega una cinta que abre con una de las secuencias más impresionantes del blockbuster moderno, no tanto en términos de escala sino por lo caótico de su presentación… y de allí en adelante el humor y la tragedia van a estar muy bien balanceados, siempre a manos del espectáculo.

El cast, que en parte rehusa personajes ya establecidos en el DCEU (Aunque demuestra poco interés en respetar el canon), se nutre con actores como John Cena, Idris Elba, Marggot Robbie y otros más secundarios pero memorables como Pete Davidson o Taika Waititi.

En mi opinión el momento más bajo de la película es el segundo acto, que se alarga demasiado y repite de forma un poco tediosa los mismos story beats, aunque un par de momentos de character development salvan la experiencia.

El clímax, visualmente atractivo y sustancialmente aburrido ofrece exactamente lo que buscaba, un espectáculo que ponga a esos personajes que se ganaron nuestras risas y cariño en posiciones entretenidas.

¿En general? Un buen blockbuster que mezcla elementos genéricos con un par de grandes sorpresas, no es nada del otro mundo pero tampoco pretende serlo. Llamarlo una de las películas más grandes del 2021 quizá sea exagerar, pero hay que tomar en cuenta que últimamente no es que abunden precisamente.

Recomiendo The Suicide Squad para aquellos que busquen un rato de diversión aunque entiendo totalmente si la porción del medio se les hace tediosa.
