As someone who loves comedies as a genre it's pretty hard to ignore Michael Cera's career, from the terrific SuperBad to his role in Arrested Development to his performance in Juno (albeit slightly more dramatic) there's an undeniable appeal in having his name on the poster… Youth In Revolt explains why quite well.
Presented as a mix between Judd Apatow's style and slightly more "indie" vibes, Youth in Revolt is a fairly humble 2009 film, with an interesting pace and an almost surreal nature that baffles but entertains in almost equal amounts.
It contributes to the experience that the cast is full of stars: Zach Galifianakis, Ray Liotta, Steve Buscemi and Justin Long are just some of the examples that we will find there.
But what is the movie about? Nick is a rather pretentious 16-year-old with a comfortable but mediocre life, constantly existing in a state of helplessness as a result of his own virginity, of course all this changes when he spends a day on vacation with his mother and stepfather and meets a beautiful girl who steals his heart.
Although in objective terms all this may sound like a typical plot that exploits the girl next door trope with touches of sexuality sprinkled here and there, Youth in Revolt is a film that constantly does much more than that, an experimental product that plays with the elitism of its own protagonist in very interesting ways.
Nick is a fascinating character, capable of creating imaginary friends to synthesize certain aspects of his own adolescent frustration as a defense mechanism that allows him to deal with all the inconveniences that overwhelm him, this is how Francois appears, a hilarious young man with a French accent, much more confident and willing to do everything possible for Nick to achieve his goals.
So this is a perfect movie? Of course not, just as it is entertaining on certain occasions, the surrealism that permeates the entire film can also be counterproductive, causing us not to get emotionally involved with the characters.
Entertaining, recommended, but nothing memorable.
