Looking for hidden gems on Netflix I came across Mindhunter, a series that I had not yet watched even though the director and showrunner is the amazing David Fincher (the director Zodiac, Fight Club, Seven, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, among many other films).
Fincher is well-known for his amazing psychological thrillers, so I just knew that Mindhunter was going to be an amazing series and I am glad that I was right.

Mindhunter is a crime thriller series based on the true-crime book Mindhunter: Inside the FBI's Elite Serial Crime Unit written by John E. Douglas, pioneer of "criminal profiling".
Mindhunter is set in the 70s and we follow two FBI agents, Holden Ford and Bill Tench, as well as psychologist Wendy Carr. This trio operates the FBI's Behavioral Science Unit and interviews notorious criminals to make a criminal profile for them. All of these characters are based on real-life people, but their backstory is entirely original.

Even though criminal profiles are something many of us are familiar with thanks to TV and films, this is a practice that was pioneered by John E. Douglas and Holt McCallany (the characters of Holden Ford and Bill Tench are inspired by them). In the course of the series, we see how little by little they get more respected in the FBI as these profiles made it easier to catch criminals.

The interviews with these criminals are very interesting, especially considering that they are real-life criminals and most of the interviews are based on actual footage and recordings... We get an interview with Edmund Kemper (the actor looks and acts just like this serial killer, it is amazing), Charles Manson, and Jerry Brudos, just to name a few.
To me what makes Mindhunter so compelling is how it is directed, as well as the amazingly acted and well-written main characters, we truly sympathize with their struggles and how hard they try to maintain a normal life having a job that entails trying to comprehend murderers.

It has 19 episodes divided into two seasons, and it must be noted that no one knows if there will be a third season because Fincher has stated that working on Mindhunter has taken a toll on him and he decided to put it on hiatus, it may come back a few years later or it might get canceled.
If you are a fan of crime thrillers then this is the perfect show for you. My wife is a huge fan of Investigation Discovery so she already knew most of the killers as well as their backstory due to the many documentaries she watches, she absolutely loved this series and she was amazed by the accuracy in which each killer is depicted, especially Kemper.
Cuenta con 19 episodios divididos en dos temporadas, y hay que destacar que nadie sabe si habrá una tercera temporada porque Fincher ha manifestado que trabajar en Mindhunter ha sido agotador y decidió darle una pausa, puede que vuelva en unos años o podría ser cancelada. Even if Mindhunter never gets finished I highly recommend it, it is one of the best Netflix original series, it had me on the edge of my seat during multiple episodes, it is undoubtedly a hidden gem that everyone should watch.
