The Last Kingdom is the latest Netflix series I've had the privilege to watch, and it quickly made its way as one of my top favorites. This British historical fiction television series is based on Bernard Cornwell's The Saxon Stories book series, also known as Saxon Chronicles. It was originally a BBC series, however, Netflix quickly became its sole distributor, so the last two seasons can only be found on that platform.
The Origins
This series takes real elements from the Anglo-Saxon history of the 9th and 10th centuries but is also mixed with fiction, although most of the characters are based on important real people from the history of England, many elements from the adventures of our protagonist are totally fictional.
The author of the books, Bernard Cornwell, is a descendant of the family of Uthred the Bold, the ealdorman of Northumbria from 1006 to 1016; This inspired him to create his magnificent protagonist Uhtred of Bebbanburg, who is named after him and who also shares certain details with his real counterpart, however, the real Uthred wasn't as amazing as our main character.
An Epic Story with Amazing Characters
The Last Kingdom tells the story of Uthred of Bebbanburg, the heir to the kingdom of Northumbria, who as a child is captured by Vikings and raised by them. This causes that although Uthred was born as a Saxon, he was raised as a Danish warrior, a Viking, this duality being heavily emphasized throughout the series, since these two groups are enemies and Uthred is just right in the middle, not being able to fully support neither the Danes nor the Saxons.
Uthred is introduced as the best warrior in the kingdom, having extensive abilities including not only his sword prowess but also his cunning and creative strategies that allow him to win many battles. Uthred's personality clashes with my favorite character in the series, King Alfred of Wessex (based on Alfred the Great, one of the greatest kings in England's history), who is physically weak but extremely intelligent.
It is very interesting to see the conflict between these two characters since Alfred tries to manipulate Uthred to do whatever he wants, and on the other hand, there is Uthred, who does not want to be Alfred's dog, but who knows that Alfred is the king who will bring prosperity to the kingdom.
The series also masterfully emphasizes the religious conflict that existed at that time, as Christianity was beginning to gain wide popularity in Europe, while Vikings were still faithful believers in Norse mythology. This can also be seen in the religious King Alfred, who wishes to build a Christian kingdom, while his enemies, the Vikings, are pagans; however, the king uses the power of our protagonist, Uthred, who is also a pagan and has no interest in Christianity, which creates a great conflict in the story.
An Unforgettable Adventure
This series is full of action, it is ideal for those who like wars, adventures, and political conflicts between kingdoms. I would go so far as to say that fans of series like Game of Thrones may like it, however, The Last Kingdom does not make emphasis on multiple narratives and characters, being that it focuses on Uthred, and it does not have any fantasy elements other than witches, who have visions.
The Last Kingdom does not give you a chance to get bored and each episode is full of action, great characters, and an excellent story. Just watching the first episode amazes you with all the events that occur in just one hour. It also has a big budget (especially since season 3, when Netflix took over), very evident in the spectacular kingdoms and war scenes.
So far it has a total of 36 episodes spread over 4 seasons, it is expected to have another season by 2021, but Netflix hasn't confirmed it. In each season the major conflicts are resolved in the finale, so there are no "cliff-hangers" at the end of the seasons. Each season is set in a specific time frame, so you are allowed to see the passing of time, as characters grow and also die.
It is a widely recommended series, especially if you are a fan of series like Vikings or Game of Thrones.

Esto permite que Uthred haga un amplio contraste con mi personaje favorito en la serie, el rey Alfredo de Wessex (basado en Alfredo el Grande, uno de los reyes más importantes de la historia de Inglaterra), quien es débil físicamente pero extremadamente inteligente.
Es muy interesante ver el conflicto entre estos dos personajes, ya que Alfredo intenta manipular a Uthred para que se haga lo que él desea, y por otro lado está Uthred, quien no desea ser el perro de Alfredo, pero que sabe que él es el rey que le traerá prosperidad al reino.
La serie también hace énfasis de forma magistral en el conflicto religioso que existía en esa época, ya que el cristianismo comenzaba a adquirir amplia popularidad en Europa, mientras que por otro lado los vikingos aún eran fieles creyentes de la mitología nórdica. Esto también se puede apreciar en que el rey Alfredo desea un reino cristiano, mientras que sus enemigos, los vikingos, son paganos; sin embargo, el rey utiliza el poder de nuesro protagonista, Uthred, quien es también un pagano y no tiene ningún interés en la religión cristiana, lo cual crea un gran conflicto en la historia.
Esta serie está llena de acción, es ideal para aquellos que les gusten las guerras, aventuras y conflictos políticos entre reinos. Me atrevería a decir que puede gustarle a los fanáticos de series como Juego de Tronos, sin embargo, The Last Kingdom no tiene un énfasis en múltiples narrativas, siendo que se centra en Uthred, y tampoco tiene elementos fantásticos con excepción de brujas, quienes tienen visiones.
