El Hoyo es una película española dirigida por Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia (desconocía por completo a este director bilbaíno) del 2019, ubicada en el género de ciencia ficción y suspenso. Entre el 2019 y 2020 este film ganó varios premios como Mejor Película, Mejor Director Revelación, entre otros en el Festival de Cine de Sitges (2019) y el Goya a los Mejores Efectos Especiales (2020). El reparto de la película contó con la participación de Iván Massagué (que lo recordé haber visto en varias series de Televisión Española, Antena 3 e incluso en el programa español Master Chef Celebrity en una de sus ediciones), Zorion Eguileor, Antonia San Juan, entre otros.

  The Platform is a Spanish film directed by Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia (I was completely unaware of this Bilbao director) from 2019, located in the genre of science fiction and suspense. Between 2019 and 2020 this film won several awards such as Best Film, Best New Director, among others at the Sitges Film Festival (2019) and the Goya for Best Special Effects (2020).    La película nos posiciona, en un principio, el la piel de Goreng, el protagonista, en una habitación para dos personas con un agujero cuadrado en el centro, tanto en el techo como en el suelo, en el cual transita una plataforma con comida que inicia su recorrido en el nivel cero, donde están ubicados los cocineros. La plataforma está repleta de comida diferente, bebidas, postres, todo lo que uno se pueda imaginar. El objetivo de las personas es comer de lo que esté en la plataforma, dándonos a entender que la mejor comida estará disponible para los primeros pisos, y a medida que baja los participantes encontrarán las sobras que van dejando los de arriba. Una alusión muy fuerte a la sociedad actual, donde los más poderosos obtienen lo mejor y de primera mano, mientras que el resto obtiene lo que va sobrando o lo que es de menor calidad.

The objective of the people is to eat what is on the platform, giving us to understand that the best food will be available for the first floors, and as participants go down they will find the leftovers left by those above. A very strong allusion to today's society, where the most powerful obtain the best and first-hand, while the rest obtain what is left over or what is of lower quality.

   Nos presentan a Goreng como un bonachón, que prefiere velar por el bien colectivo antes que su bien propio. Esta percepción nunca cambia a través de la película, ya que se mantiene fiel a sus principios, mientras que podemos ver cómo hay participantes que son capaces de asesinar a sus compañeros de "celda" para asegurar su supervivencia, y algunos hasta se suicidan al no aguantar la presión del sistema de autogestión vertical diseñado. Mensualmente los participantes son cambiados al azar de piso, igualmente les podría tocar con un compañero diferente o repetir el mismo, aleatoriamente en los dos casos.

This perception never changes throughout the film, as it remains true to its principles, while we can see how there are participants who are capable of murdering their "cell" companions to ensure their survival, and some even commit suicide by not withstand the pressure of the designed vertical self-management system. On a monthly basis, the participants are randomly changed from the floor, it could also be played with a different partner or repeat the same, randomly in both cases.

   La película sale un poco de foco cuando entra en juego un personaje impensable... Una niña. Es imposible que un menor de edad esté en El Hoyo, pero lo está, y su madre la está buscando desenfrenadamente. Goreng se atribuye el deber de conseguir a la niña, quien se dice que está en el último nivel del edificio; aunque nadie sabe con exactitud cuántos pisos son. La existencia de la niña y la necesidad de conseguirla y subirla al nivel cero, se vuelve el centro de una de las teorías más grandes al rededor de su participación, la relacionan con el principal emblema de rebeldía de los participantes del hoyo, como su salvadora.

   Este film puede dejarnos varios mensajes e interpretaciones, más o menos dependiendo de la mente de cada uno. Para mí (y seguramente muchas personas más), esta película es una clara alegoría a la sociedad de hoy en día, con sus virtudes y defectos. Tenemos todo tipo de compañeros que podemos toparnos en nuestra vida, desde los más tranquilos e introspectivos, hasta los más peligrosos y enfermos. Además, de cómo es la repartición de los recursos actualmente, donde un grupo o pequeño porcentaje de población muy privilegiado cuenta con una inmensa cantidad de recursos a su disposición, de la mejor calidad y disponible cuando desee; mientras que el resto de las personas que representan un porcentaje altísimo, ven cercenados o limitados sus recursos, y luego está una clasificación dentro del "resto de población" que solo cuenta con las migajas o sobras que dejan los demás.

  This film can leave us various messages and interpretations, more or less depending on the mind of each one. For me (and surely many more people), this film is a clear allegory to today's society, with its strengths and weaknesses. We have all kinds of companions that we can meet in our lives, from the most calm and introspective, to the most dangerous and sick. In addition, how is the distribution of resources currently, where a very privileged group or small percentage of the population has an immense amount of resources at their disposal, of the best quality and available when they want; while the rest of the people who represent a very high percentage, see their resources curtailed or limited, and then there is a classification within the "rest of the population" that only has the crumbs or leftovers left by others.

   Tal como en la vida real, las personas pueden ir variando a través de su vida de status social y de recursos disponibles, por eso es que en El Hoyo mensualmente se cambian de piso a los participantes aleatoriamente, solo que en la vida no sucede de manera aleatoria, sino que se desprende del esfuerzo que aplique cada quien en cumplir sus metas y los negocios exitosos que logre hacer para mejorar su posición económica y el saber aprovechar las situaciones externas sin dañar al prójimo. Como mencioné previamente, la niña dentro del hoyo es relacionada con el Mesías que representa la inocencia y que solo quiere sobrevivir dentro de un mundo absurdamente hostil y dañino.

   Sinceramente, la película me pareció muy interesante en un principio pero mientras esta se iba desarrollando, me fui aburriendo y la sentí muy pesada. Pero me gustó que fuera una crítica social dirigida hacia la desigualdad de condiciones y oportunidades, a desenmascarar el egoísmo que existe en el corazón humano que siempre quiere velar por el bien personal antes del bien común, lo descabellado que puede volverse el ser humano para asegurar su supervivencia sin importar que se le esté haciendo un daño mortal a nuestro prójimo (claramente podemos ver una escena de canibalismo por parte de un compañero de nuestro protagonista para sobrevivir); y que todo esto esté albergado en nuestros corazones y saldrá a la luz cuando nos veamos en situaciones extremas.

  Honestly, the movie seemed very interesting to me at first, but while it was developing, I got bored and felt very heavy. But I liked that it was a social criticism directed towards the inequality of conditions and opportunities, to unmask the selfishness that exists in the human heart that always wants to ensure the personal good before the common good, how far-fetched the human being can become to ensure their survival regardless of whether mortal harm is being done to our neighbor; and that all this is housed in our hearts and will come to light when we find ourselves in extreme situations.

   ¿Les recomendaría verla? Sí. Es bien interesante y cada quien puede extraer mensajes o interpretaciones diferentes, por lo que a cada quién le podrá despertar sentimientos diferentes y crear una opinión diferente para poder debatir o conversar con amigos, familiares o lectores del blog. A pesar de ser del 2019 (relativamente nueva), su mensaje se mantiene vigente y sigue siendo considerada una de las películas más exitosas y controversiales que han estado disponibles en el servicio de streaming Netflix.

  Would I recommend you watching the movie? Yes. It is very interesting and everyone can extract different messages or interpretations, so that each person can awaken different feelings and create a different opinion to be able to debate or talk with friends, family or blog readers. Despite being from 2019 (relatively new), its message remains current and is still considered one of the most successful and controversial films that have been available on the Netflix streaming service.
