Central Intelligence (2016) | Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart Are a Fun Duo

Hello everyone.

Recently I watched Central Intelligence (2016), a movie starring Dwayne Johnson and, Kevin Hart, and I've seen these actors in many movies before, so I had a feeling this would be a fun watch.

I wasn’t looking for anything serious or complicated, I just wanted something entertaining to sit back as well as enjoy, as well as Central Intelligence was exactly that.

This is one of those movies where you do not need to think too much, you just watch the characters get themselves into ridiculous situations and enjoy the chaos, kinda.

So this review stays spoiler free, so if you have not watched it yet do not worry, I will keep the story details vague.

The story starts with two former high school classmates who end up taking very different paths in life.

Calvin Joyner, played by Kevin Hart, was a popular student in high school, but years later his life isn’t exactly what he imagined it would be.

Then he suddenly reconnects with Bob Stone, played by Dwayne Johnson.

And Bob is different from the person Calvin remembers.

Without going into the actual plot details, Bob is now involved in some serious situations and pulls Calvin into the domain of of spies, criminals, guns and international trouble.

The part is that Calvin is not prepared for any of this.

He's a normal guy who finds himself running around with a former classmate who knows how to fight everyone.

The humor comes from the difference between the two characters.

The main reason I enjoyed this movie is the chemistry between the two leads.

Kevin Hart and Dwayne Johnson have completely different personalities, both on screen in addition to in the characters they play.

Kevin Hart is loud, nervous, sarcastic and questions what is happening.

Dwayne Johnson plays Bob as a large, cheerful man who can become dangerous when needed.

It's a funny combination.

You have this small, stressed out guy constantly trying to figure out why his life has suddenly turned into an action movie, while the biggest guy in the room is acting like everything is completely normal.

Their conversations are some of my favorite parts of the movie.

Even when nothing particularly crazy is happening, their interactions can still be funny.

Dwayne Johnson has played a lot of action roles, but I think one of the fun things about Central Intelligence is seeing him combine action with comedy.

Bob Stone is a strange character because he is physically intimidating but also has a very innocent and, friendly personality at times.

The movie plays around with the contrast between his appearance also his behavior.

He's this enormous guy who looks like he could destroy a wall with his bare hands, but then he'll say or do something completely unexpected.

Johnson knows the character he plays and does not take it seriously.

And that causes it to work.

The action scenes are entertaining in addition to you know you will get ridiculous fights with Dwayne Johnson and the movie definitely delivers that.

Kevin Hart basically becomes the audience's reaction to everything happening around him.

Whenever Bob does something insane, Calvin is there asking the questions that a normal person would probably ask.

"Why are we doing this?".

"What is happening?".

That makes him relatable.

He is not an action hero who suddenly knows how to use every weapon or defeat every enemy, he is just a regular guy who wants his normal life back.

Kevin Hart's fast talking as well as exaggerated reactions can be too much after watching many of his movies where he plays a similar character.

But here it fits the story well.

This is mainly a comedy, and it also includes a lot of action.

There are shootouts, car chases, fights and plenty of explosions.

The action isn't groundbreaking but it's entertaining.

I liked that the movie doesn't take itself too seriously, because even during the intense moments there's usually a joke or something funny happening.

Action and comedy mix well together.

There are moments where you can predict what will happen, but the way the movie presents it can still cause laughter.

This isn't the action movie you watch for military tactics or spy operations.

It's more like a comedy that happens to have guns in addition to explosions.

And I accepted that.

The movie has a spy and, thriller element.

There are secrets, government agents, criminals, and folks trying to get to the bottom of things.

The spy story isn't the main reason to watch this movie.

The plot is mostly there to move Calvin and, Bob from one crazy situation to another.

There are twists and surprises along the way, but I will not mention them because they're better experienced while watching.

I did not try hard to understand everything.

I was there for the comedy and the two characters.

Watching Central Intelligence in 2026 also gave me that familiar feeling of watching a mid 2010s Hollywood comedy.

The style is very much from that era.

The jokes, the action, the soundtrack and even the way the characters interact all feel like something you would see in a big comedy movie from the 2010s.

It is not trying to be an artistic masterpiece.

It's meant to entertain you.

That is worth recognizing.

So not every movie needs to have a complicated message or incredible cinematography sometimes you just want to spend two hours laughing at two actors doing ridiculous stuff.

A thing that surprised me was that beneath the jokes and action, there is a story about friendship and how people change over time.

Without getting into spoilers, Calvin and Bob have a history together.

Their reunion brings up old memories and feelings, and the movie shows how their lives turned out differently.

It's not very deep, but it adds some substance to the characters beyond just two guys making jokes.

I also liked the idea of not judging someone just based on who they used to be.

Sometimes the person you remember from years ago isn't the same person anymore.

The movie is not perfect.

There were definitely some jokes that didn't land for me.

So Kevin Hart's comedy style can also become repetitive if you are already familiar with his other movies, and there are moments where the yelling and the constant reactions get a little tiring.

The story itself is also fairly predictable in places.

If you have watched enough action comedies, you can likely guess where certain things are heading.

I don't think that's a big problem here.

The movie isn't really selling itself as a complicated thriller.

It is selling itself as a fun action comedy with Kevin Hart and Dwayne Johnson.

And in that department, it does a good job.

I enjoyed Central Intelligence.

The film has action. Kevin Hart and, Dwayne Johnson work well together.

The story is not revolutionary, and some of the jokes will not work for everyone, but I think the movie knows what it wants to be.

It is an action comedy.

If you want a serious movie, this probably is not it.

But if you want something you can put on after a long day, grab some snacks in addition to just enjoy without thinking too much, then Central Intelligence is a pretty solid choice.

So the best part is the relationship between Calvin as well as Bob as their different personalities naturally create funny situations.

I wouldn't call Central Intelligence one of the greatest comedy movies I've ever seen, but I definitely don't regret watching it.

This one did that.
