Dumb and Dumber (1994) | 90s Comedy at Its Dumbest

Review by @rookie2001 🏆#133 🔥1 🎵9 🎬7 📚2 · 6h · of Dumb and Dumber

Hello Everyone! Hope you all are doing great.

So I wanted to talk about a movie I watched recently, Dumb and Dumber (1994), and I had heard about it for a long time, I already knew Jim Carrey was in it, but somehow I never got around to watching it. So recently I finally decided to give it a try.

So I think the title tells you pretty much everything you need to know, you know.

Dumb and Dumber is a movie you watch to enjoy the stupidity without thinking too much, it doesn’t try to be a serious comedy with a deep message. It's just two guys. They get into ridiculous situations. Somehow it works.

This review has no spoilers.

The Story

The movie follows Lloyd Christmas and Harry Dunne, two best friends who are not the smartest people in the world.

Lloyd is played by Jim Carrey as well as Harry is played by Jeff Daniels so the two work together as a limo driver and, a dog groomer and they live a simple life. Lloyd drives a woman to the airport. He becomes interested in her. He decides to follow her. The two friends end up in a much bigger adventure.

So I'm keeping the story details vague because watching these two somehow make one bad decision after another is part of the fun.

What I liked is that the movie doesn't try to make the characters secretly intelligent as they are genuinely dumb and it commits to that idea.

So usually when movies have stupid characters, they might suddenly become smart whenever the plot needs them to, but here Lloyd and, Harry can barely make a sensible decision, which is basically where a lot of the comedy comes from.

Jim Carrey Is Absolutely Insane in This Movie

If you have watched Jim Carrey before, you already know that the man can be expressive.

But watching him in Dumb and Dumber is different.

His facial expressions, his physical comedy, his voice and, the way he moves around make Lloyd a ridiculous character sometimes there are moments where he does not need to say anything and, I laugh because of his expression.

In this performance, Jim Carrey is having fun.

He does not hold back at all.

Some of his movements are exaggerated and, wouldn't work with another actor, but Carrey makes them hilarious.

So we have Jeff Daniels who I wasn't expecting to be funny in a movie like this and his character Harry is more calm than Lloyd but he's still as stupid. .

The chemistry between the two is why the movie works.

They feel like two idiots who have somehow been best friends for years.

Lloyd and Harry

The friendship between Lloyd also Harry is one of my favorite parts of the movie.

They aren't smart.

They do not succeed.

They are not good at making decisions.

But they're friends.

They're fun to watch.

They constantly get themselves into trouble, but they also show weird loyalty to each other, even when they annoy each other, you can still tell that they genuinely care about one another.

Their conversations are also hilarious because sometimes they are arguing about things that make absolutely no sense.

There is an innocence in both characters too, they are not really trying to hurt anyone or cause problems, kinda. Most of the time, they do not understand what is happening.

That makes it easier to enjoy their foolishness.

The Comedy

The comedy in this movie is definitely not for everyone.

It's silly.

Very childish at times.

And sometimes it is completely ridiculous.

But that is what the movie is going for.

There are jokes that are based on misunderstandings, physical comedy, awkward situations, stupid conversations and characters doing things that any normal person would probably never do.

Some jokes worked better for me than others and a few times I just sat there thinking what am I even watching you know what I mean.

Those moments fit the movie.

So this isn't a comedy where you need to focus on every small detail or get some complex joke, you can just sit back and watch two pretty dumb people go on an adventure.

And honestly, sometimes that's exactly what you need.

The Road Trip Feeling

One thing I enjoyed was the road trip part of the movie.

A lot of the movie takes place while Lloyd and Harry are travelling, and this gives the whole thing a feeling of adventure.

You are following these two men as they move from one situation to another.

You know things won't go smoothly because of who they are.

The movie also has a strong 1990s comedy vibe.

There is something about older comedies that feels different from many modern comedy movies, it is the pacing and the style and, the practical locations and the era's willingness to be completely ridiculous.

Watching this in 2026 was actually pretty fun because it feels like a little time capsule from the 90s.

The 1990s Charm

The movie was released in 1994 and you can definitely feel its age.

The clothes, cars, hairstyles, locations, and overall visual style reflect the 1990s.

And I liked that.

Not every movie needs to look modern.

Sometimes watching an older movie gives you a different atmosphere, so Dumb also Dumber has the warm slightly goofy 90s comedy look that fits the story perfectly.

The movie does not feel complicated visually, and, it is focused on the characters and the situations they get themselves into.

That is best.

Some jokes have aged badly

Now, I do have to mention something.

Not every joke in this movie holds up.

So there are jokes and moments that feel like they came from the 1990s and some of them made me laugh while others made me stare at the screen for a second. .

Comedy changes over time, so jokes from decades ago don't land the same way today.

But I don't think that ruins the movie.

Watching older comedies shows how their sense of humour differs from modern movies.

There were still plenty of moments where I laughed out loud.

CONCLUSION

I had fun watching Dumb and Dumber.

Does it succeed at being a ridiculously stupid and entertaining comedy?

I would say yes.

The strength of the movie is Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels, their chemistry works, and Lloyd & Harry are characters I understand why this movie has remained popular for many years.

Know what you're getting into.

So don’t watch this expecting a clever story or serious character development, watch it when you want something silly, chaotic, and, easy to enjoy.

Some jokes didn't land for me, but many made me laugh because the whole situation was so absurd.

Sometimes you do not need a complicated movie.

So you need two idiots in a car going on an adventure.
