So I Finally Watched Gladiator (2000)

Review by @rookie2001 🏆#128 🎵6 🎬4 📚2 · 1h · of Gladiator

Hello Everyone! Hope you all are doing great.

So I have been slowly making my way through some of the movies that are considered modern classics as well as recently I finally watched Gladiator (2000). I have obviously heard about this movie for years. People talk about epic movies in history. Gladiator almost always comes up.

After watching it, I understand why.

So this is a movie that feels big from the beginning, the battles, the Roman Empire, the costumes, the music, the arenas, the characters, and everything feels like it was made on a large scale.

But what surprised me was that underneath all the action and spectacle, Gladiator is actually a very emotional story about a man who loses almost everything and has to find a reason to keep going.

I’m going to keep this review completely spoiler free, so you don’t need to worry if you haven’t watched it yet, and I won’t talk about any major events or twists.

The movie stars Russell Crowe as Maximus, a respected Roman general who is basically at the centre of the story.

Maximus is the kind of character who feels like someone you can follow.

He is strong and disciplined and, respected by the people around him but he is not written as an unbeatable superhero and there is a calmness to him that I liked.

He doesn't need to constantly tell everyone how powerful he is.

You can see it through the way he acts.

That was one of the things that made me enjoy the character.

Maximus is also a family man, which gives the character another side beyond being a warrior, the relationship with his family makes his motivations feel more personal.

This is not just a story about fighting in an arena.

It's a story about loyalty, loss, revenge, honor, and, holding onto your identity as everything around you changes.

Russell Crowe is in this movie. I can honestly see why he won the Academy Award for his performance.

There are scenes where he barely says anything, but you can still tell exactly what he's feeling.

His facial expressions do a lot of the work.

Maximus is a man who has experienced much, and Crowe shows this without making the character overly dramatic.

When he is angry, you feel it.

When he is sad, you feel it.

And, when he enters the arena, you understand why the other characters take him seriously.

The performance makes the character seem bigger than the movie.

But the rest of the cast is good.

Joaquin Phoenix plays Commodus, and he is one of the most interesting characters for me to watch.

He is different from Maximus.

Maximus is controlled and, disciplined. Commodus is emotional and insecure.

The contrast between the two works well.

Now we'll discuss the action.

You can't review Gladiator without mentioning the battles.

And wow.

For a movie released in 2000, some of these sequences are still impressive.

The opening battle gives you an idea of what kind of movie you are watching.

Armies, horses, swords, arrows, fire and chaos are everywhere.

What I appreciated is that the action doesn't seem completely random.

One can understand what happens.

A lot of modern action movies have so much fast editing that sometimes I've no idea who's hitting who.

Gladiator gives its action scenes enough space to breathe.

You see the fighters.

You understand the movement.

You can feel the weapons' impact.

The gladiator arena scenes are entertaining.

Every fight seems dangerous because the movie shows these people are fighting for their lives.

What surprised me most was how emotional the movie is.

I went into Gladiator expecting an action movie with Roman soldiers and sword fights.

I didn't expect it to hit me emotionally as much as it did.

The movie spends a lot of time exploring Maximus as a person.

His dreams.

His memories.

His relationship with his family.

He's got a sense of duty.

And, his desire to return home.

Quiet moments matter because without them, the action would not have as much impact.

If we did not care about Maximus, the fights would be fights.

Instead, you are watching someone who has a lot at stake.

In addition to that makes every victory feel satisfying, every setback feel painful.

I loved the cinematography.

Ridley Scott creates the Roman in modern times visually.

The landscapes are large, the battles are extensive, and, the Colosseum feels large.

There is also a really nice contrast between the peaceful countryside scenes and, the violent arena.

The movie can go from a beautiful sunset to absolute chaos in a matter of minutes.

The production design also deserves credit.

The armour, weapons, buildings, costumes, and sets all support the portrayal of ancient Rome.

Nothing feels cheap.

Everything feels carefully designed.

The characters show dirt and, blood. This makes the domain of feel real.

Then there's the music.

Hans Zimmer and, Lisa Gerrard created a memorable soundtrack.

The music adds so much emotion to the movie.

There are moments where the visuals are strong on their own, and then the soundtrack starts playing and, makes the scene even better.

The main themes have a spiritual quality.

It is more than background music.

It becomes part of the movie's identity.

I thought about the soundtrack after the movie.

That's usually a good sign.

Another thing I liked is that the movie does not spend time explaining everything.

You get info about the Roman Empire & the political situation to understand what's happening, but the movie stays clear of a history lecture.

It focuses on the characters.

And I think that's the right choice.

You do not need to know every detail about ancient Rome to enjoy this movie.

You need to understand the people involved and, their wants.

That's enough.

Of course, Gladiator is not perfect.

Some of the historical accuracy is questionable. If you're watching it specifically as a history lesson, don't take everything as fact.

The movie has moments that feel somewhat predictable.

None of that bothered me much.

I'm watching Gladiator as a movie, not a documentary.

And as a movie, it works incredibly well.

The pacing is good considering the film's length.

I never really felt like it was dragging.

Even when the action slows down, something with the characters or the story keeps your interest.

Gladiator is a film that combines an epic blockbuster with a personal story.

You have large armies as well as political conflicts on one side.

But on the other side, you have one man who simply wants to find peace and return to the life he had.

That balance makes the movie work.

It would be easy for a movie this big to lose its emotional center.

But Gladiator doesn't.

It always comes back to Maximus.

He traveled.

His pain.

His determination.

His honor.

And his desire for something beyond the violence around him.

After finishing Gladiator, I finally understood why people still talk about it more than twenty years later.

It is not just a great historical movie.

It's an action movie.

It is not just Russell Crowe giving an amazing performance.

They all work together.

Battles are intense.

The characters linger.

The music sounds good.

The cinematography is fantastic.

As well as most importantly, there is an emotional story underneath all of it.

I also think this is one of those movies that would be better on a big screen, the scale of the battles and the arena is something you want to experience with good sound and a large display.

If you have not watched Gladiator yet, I would definitely recommend it, especially if you enjoy historical movies, epic battles or character driven stories.

Just don't go into it expecting two hours of nonstop sword fighting.

There is a lot more to it than that.

Anyway thats it for this post. Please do give your reviews in the comments section below. I would really appreciate it :)

I'll be back with another one soon. So do follow me if you want to stay updated. Till then, Stay Happy and Stay Hydrated.
