IMDb.com trivia mentions that this film was the winner of the 2013 Cine Coup Film Accelerator program and received a million dollars in funding and a guaranteed release in Cineplex theatres here in Canada. I actually knew this going in, I am a filmmaker here in Canada, and while I didn’t submit anything to this contest, I ran out of time, I was interested to hear that the winner was something called Wolfcop. This particular film accelerator program was designed for horror movies. I probably would have financed the thing based on the name alone, had I that kind of money laying around. Granted my production company may have been upset if I were producing shows not from our creative team.

I digress.

Wolfcop is straight B-movie fare. It is far from great, in fact I don’t know what to think of it. The dialogue is rough. The characters are caricatures. There is nothing subtle about this movie. The cop in question is named Lou Garou.

Sgt. Lou Garou is an alcoholic cop in a small town who wakes up from blackout too many to discover he is a werewolf. Heightened senses in daylight, a lot of fur at night. Very much focused on being police-ish more than usual. He has to take on a gang.

The Good...

This is one of those “so-bad-it’s-good” type flicks. The characters are bad caricature but the actors commit, you get the impression they had fun making this.

The werewolf transformation was original, kind of gory.

The story is kind of neat.

The Not So Good...

All that dialogue stuff. Plus the script. Some of the acting and directing choices.

There’s a sequel that’s just been released. I don’t know if that’s a good or bad thing.

Worth watching but don’t expect brilliance.
