Marilyn Monroe is someone I've always been a fan of. She balances vulnerability with some great comedic timing and is just extraordinary to watch onscreen. I devoured her movies, read the biographies, scoured the internet about her, blah, blah, blah. I'm not being dismissive there, I truly am a fan and truly enjoy her work. She was far more talented than people give her credit for and she is very often written off as an airhead by too many without realizing that they are conflating her performances with her reality. She was flawed and deserved better but she was not the airhead that she is often dismissed as.
How to Marry a Millionaire may be a prime reason she is given this image. In it she plays a model who, with Lauren Bacall and Betty Grable, rent a penthouse with the intent of using the address to attract millionaires to marry. Lauren Bacall is icy but in a fun way (what does that mean Rob?), Betty Grable is bubbly and adorable, and Marilyn is blind without her glasses but convinced she can't wear them if she wants to attract a man. The story is basically the traditional romantic comedy, and by traditional I mean 1953 traditional where the women are trying to marry up, something that was big in the 50s and even today for better or worse. The story is the marry for love or money and they all pick love in the end. It is fun because of the performances and Marilyn is great.
