The Survivors stars Robin Williams and Walter Matthau as two men having a bad day: the former is Donald, fired by a parrot, the latter, Sonny, loses his gas station to a fire. They are strangers in a diner when it is robbed. The two of them disarm the robber, played by Jerry Reed, and their lives are changed.
Hijinks ensue.
Walter Matthau is strong in this film. He gives a thoughtful, understated performance as Sonny, a man trying to just get through all the chaos that explodes around him.
Robin Williams is good as well, though his pathos struggles with an almost over-the-top performance. I miss Williams.
The film is amusing. It suffers a little from the 1980s but it is a strong early Williams performance. The final scene between Williams and Matthau is both heartbreaking and brilliant.
Good fun. Some age is showing.
