It's hard to look back on some films. Especially when the star of that film has gone sideways in his very public personal life where his words and actions reveal a bigotry, sexism and racism that is both scary and unacceptable. I am not concerned that many appear to have forgiven Mel Gibson his trespasses, or blamed his addictions for his bigotry. I find it hard to watch his films now, just like I find it difficult to watch a Woody Allen film or a Casey Affleck film.
Which is too bad because Lethal Weapon, and Lethal Weapon 2 for that matter, are really great films. Lethal Weapon 3 and Lethal Weapon 4 are not good films. The first two, however, would stand the test of time were it not for the later revelations about the bigotry in the Gibson persona. He gives a strong performance, as does Danny Glover and Gary Busey.
I generally enjoy this movie about a police detective partnered with a suicidal, um, partner who are hunting a murderer, uncovering a much larger, more in depth, drug operation going on. It is quite good. One of director Richard Donner's best. Dinner has had a very mixed career, the first two Lethal Weapons, Ladyhawke, Scrooged, Superman: The Movie being highlights, his later career moving more towards a lot of sameness, bland.
This one is worth seeing but it's difficult to enjoy anymore.
