It's hard not to like Nick Frost. Sometimes dismissed as Simon Pegg's sidekick in the Cornet Trilogy, Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, The World's End; as well as Paul. He was also Pegg's sidekick in the television series, Spacers, and it is easy to think this is going to be his lot in life. Fortunately, he's made Cuban Fury and, allowed to shine in his own light, shows that he is more than just the sidekick.
Frost is Bruce, a once promising salsa dancer who gave up and grew into an unhappy office worker who has, more or less, given up on life. Into his world arrives Julia, played by the awesome Rashida Jones, as his quietly neurotic new boss and he is suddenly wishing for more than he has accepted for himself. Chris O'Dowd is his romantic competition, a selfish, self-absorbed boor who is determined to bed Julia.
Inspired by her, Bruce goes back to dancing and the film is his attempts to reclaim that passion he once had and win the girl.
It's a fun film. It doesn't look like it was a big budget film and some of that was problematic, the film just didn't look great, but Frost was funny, O'Dowd was boorish and Jones was charming (though she hasn't found that role that lets her really shine, though I do like Angie Tribeca). The dancing was great and, being an overweight man myself, it was nice to see the larger man dignified and not just the fat joke.
