The Spy Who Dumped Me stars Mila Kunis and Kate McKinnon as two friends who are forced into a wacky adventure in Europe after they are asked to complete a mission by Kunis’ character’s ex-boyfriend, a CIA agent who dumped her.
It is wildly uneven. The film jumps from silly comedy to surprisingly shocking violence. The comic stuff gets really, really silly while the violence gets harsh, often unexpectedly switching from one to the other and back again. It’s jolting.
Having said that, I have to admit I enjoyed the film. McKinnon is always fun to watch, though she doesn’t always balance the comedy and drama well. Kunis continues to be a strong performer.
