Well.

Hmm. I don't know what to think of this one. One of my favourite science fiction/ horror franchises. I even enjoy Alien 3, though I didn't care for the cgi xenomorph in Alien: Resurrection and the introduction of a resurrected Ridley was confusing and, I think, a little misguided. I was intrigued by the idea of Prometheus. Ridley Scott was back as director and the film was said to be a prequel to Alien. The thinly veiled reference to the Titan that would be punished by a god for his hubris was more than realized in the weird story and poorly told story. It was a beautiful looking film but it had a lot of problems. Scott has always been more a style over substance director. He is a designer more than a storyteller.

Even so, I did enjoy it to an extent.

Alien: Covenant started out as Prometheus 2 but was rebranded to more closely show the connection to the original series and was, to a degree, meant to set up that original series. I am not sure it succeeds on those grounds.

This is also a beautiful looking film. The story doesn't work but it is entertaining and has some suspense going for it. Characters kept doing stupid things though.

Michael Fassbender reprises his role as David, from Prometheus, and also Walter, a newer generation synthetic who serves aboard a colony ship, the Covenant, that lands on a planet where David happens to be living after the events of Prometheus. Chaos ensues, people die, xenomorphs run amok.

There is a lot of talk about creation as David and Walter debate the nature of their existence and the general reason for the existence of the xenomorph and their variations.

The early shots of Covenant are annoying, they look very computer generated, as do some of the littler versions of the xenomorph, but later footage found the right balance.

I can't decide if I liked the ending, which of course I won't spoil here, because I don't know what it means in this storyline but I was intrigued by it. Like I said, I was more entertained than I thought I would be but I didn't necessarily think it was good. I'm confused about it.

I’m not an alien fan. But it was ok.
