I’m not as enamoured of the Marvel Cinematic Universe as the rest of human civilization, I’m afraid. Controversially, I would admit that I didn’t care for Captain America: Civil War, AntMan or this one. I have no real interest in seeing Spider-man: Homecoming and, while I enjoyed Dr. Strange, I have no real interest right now in seeing it again.

Age of Ultron brings all of the beloved heroes again, Iron Man, Captain America, Black Widow, Hawkeye, The Hulk, Thor and places them in the MCU after events in Captain America: The Winter Solder and the tv series, Agents of SHIELD. Tony Stark/Iron Man is trying to develop a means to protect the world from threats from off-planet and accidentally creates Ultron, a super-powerful, sentient and angry robot that can pretty much do anything, including endlessly replicating itself and planning to wipe out humanity as the best means of protecting humanity. He enlists Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver to help him. There’s action scenes that look cool, the Avengers have to hide, Nick Cage shows up and lots of confusing things happen with Thor investigating a separate thing surrounding the infinity stones, a theme that has run through all the MCU movies. Tony Stark and Bruce Banner create Vision with something they stole from Ultron and an infinity stone and there is a big, prolonged climax that felt so much like the climax of the first Avengers movie that I was bored.

In fact, I was bored for much of it. There is a lot of setting up going on in this film for upcoming MCU stories, and like Iron Man 2, the film suffers for it.

It’s mostly enjoyable, I guess, but I was bored and didn’t feel any real connection to the characters or story.
