After the first Independence Day came out and my brother and I finally saw it, we riffed around on a sketch of a potential sequel: an alien ship fires its big gun, enveloping the White House in a glorious explosion. The camera pans around to reveal Bill Pullman's President Whitmore who mutters, "Dang, I just rebuilt that."
Which, in my humble opinion, is better than all of the actual sequel, Independence Day: Resurgence. Sorry. This one is bad. The original was nothing more than a popcorn flick that didn't pretend to be anything more than that, with nods to alien invasion b-movies of the past and charming performances by Will Smith, Pullman, Margaret Colin and Jeff Goldblum.
Pullman and Goldblum are back in this one, accompanied by a whole mess of young actors who I don't recall because none of them have the charisma of the original cast. Goldblum takes centre stage for long stretches and relies on all of the Jeff Goldblum ticks that he has done a lot in recent years. Pullman has a smaller role this time.
The film decides that everything has to be bigger and more explosion-y and I don't know why, really. It also tries to set up a third film.
Don't waste your time.
