Not really a review so much as a reflection tonight with regard to Mars Attacks, the film by Tim Burton. They don’t make movies like this anymore. I quite enjoy it. I like the throwback to fifties science fiction, both in the story and in the story-telling, the way Burton films the action so that it even looks like old flicks like War of the Worlds.
In these fifties and sixties extravaganzas, large ensembles take on the aliens and Burton does that again here, giving Jack Nicholson two roles to sink his teeth into and everybody else the chance to mug and chew the scenery as they perform against cgi monsters and some, admittedly ridiculous shenanigans.
I quite enjoy it and the ending is wholly unexpected, believe it or not. Definitely worth checking out, even if only for nostalgia’s sake.
