Pitch Perfect is the next film that popped up on my radar this week. I’ve seen it a couple of times in the past and quite enjoy it. It had a bit of an explosion, partly because it was a female-centric movie that was both a comedy and a musical and it succeeded against the generally- and unfairly- accepted idea that a female-led film cannot succeed. As stated, this is an unfair and somewhat sexist view of Hollywood and something that needs to change.
Pitch Perfect stars Anna Kendrick, Rebel Wilson, Brittany Snow and a few other young women who make up the Bardem Bellas, a college a cappella group that competes locally, and nationally, and are currently going through some growing pains as they struggle to remain strong while dealing with some stagnation in their routines. Anna Kendrick is Beca, the new girl who brings a fresh vibe to the group as she attempts to navigate her first year of college, her distant roommate, her musical passions and her dedication to the group.
The Good:
What’s not to like about this film. The Bellas are a great group of young women who sing very well and get along mostly great. Their chemistry with each other is palpable and they are a lot of fun to watch.
The guys’ group is a lot of fun too and their competition with the women is funny and thoughtful.
Rebel Wilson as Fat Amy is very funny, sometimes feeling like she is in her own world, her love/hate relationship with Adam Devine is cute.
Elizabeth Banks and John Michael Higgins as the a cappella commentators are very funny.
The Bad:
Not much here. I was creeped out by the vomit scene.
This one is funny and did well enough to spawn a funny sequel. It is charming and thoughtful, balancing nicely with some more zany comedy and depth. Anna Kendrick is great. The music is great.
Worth watching.
