Insomniac Movie Marathon: Spies Like Us

Review by @rvgenaille · 2487d · of Spies Like Us

Dan Aykroyd is Austin Milbarge, Chevy Chase is Emmit Fitz-Hume and this is Spies Like Us, a classic 1980s Cold War comedy. I use the term “classic” a little bit loosely but it is enjoyable for the most part. It is less a movie than a loose plot connecting a series of set pieces that don’t always work.

Aykroyd and Chase are two low level government workers who become intelligence operatives on a secret mission as unknowing decoys, providing opportunities for the two to do their comedy thing. Zaniness ensues all over the place.

The two are fun to watch as the movie progresses, I really didn’t care for them early on. The training scenes are funny as well as their time in Pakistan, although the Pakistani characters were somewhat stereotypical and problematic. The Soviet agents were as well.

None were in the film very long and the movie belongs to the two main characters though. They get along well together and it is fun watching them on screen together. Like most action comedies of this era, the plot tends to wrap up very quickly and illogically.

Mostly fun, some problems.
