Horror Poster of the Day #3: IT CAME FROM BENEATH THE SEA

There were a lot of "It" films in the 1950s, and many of them focused on the threat of nuclear radiation and its impact on the local environment. 1955's

It Came from Beneath the Sea

is no different; instead of massive land animals like killer shrews, ants, or spiders, though, the film's chief focus was a giant octopus.

It wasn't enough for the octopus to be giant, either. It had to be irradiated thanks to hydrogen bomb testing in the ocean, making this Kraken from the deep even more terrifying and politically topical.

It Came from Beneath the Sea's poster artwork is a solid attempt at copying the same intriguing concepts that made posters for Them! and It Came from Outer Space work so well: illustrated madness as a monster wreaks havoc on a town that could just be yours, with the tentacles the only featured appendage to show just how massive this creature really is. It Came from Beneath the Sea's artwork is a great throwback to a time when movies attempted to bottle up the real terror Americans experienced as the threat of nuclear warfare loomed over the horizon.

Have you seen It Came from Beneath the Sea? What'd you think?
