This series is based on a true event: the discovery of 45 bodies abandoned in a New Orleans hospital after Hurricane Katrina devastated the city.
Apple TV + premieres the first three episodes. What happened there? This controversial case of one of the hospitals located in the most affected area makes us question what is correct and what is incorrect in human reactions.
The whip of Hurricane Katrina left more than 1,800 people dead and extensive damage to structures in New Orleans. The series "After Hurricane Katrina" (Five Days at Memorial) recounts the situations and the chaos that moved in the Memorial Medical Center hospital, for 5 days after the impact.
Perhaps we all read about the case in the news, but the reality that they experienced due to the lack of help and the emergency that occurred in the facilities forced the medical staff to make some tough decisions that influenced the well-being and survival of their patients. .
Now with this series, the measures and decisions of the medical team will come to the fore, including Dr. Anna Pou, where some will be severely critical, while another group justifies their humane way of proceeding, not letting them suffer in agony alone.
“Based on true events and adapted from Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Sheri Fink's book, Five Days At Memorial chronicles the impact of Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath on a local hospital. When the water level rose, the power failed and the temperature rose, exhausted caregivers at a New Orleans hospital were forced to make decisions that would follow them for years to come.
The entire course of the series makes us reflect on the human condition, professional ethics and morals. Of course, who are we to make judgments or condemn the desperation of the medical staff? When we weren't there looking at the pain of the patients, they were slowly dying.
I flatly recommend you, if you are a sensitive person, do not watch it, there are scenes with a lot of desperation. "After Hurricane Katrina" is not easy to watch, in fact, it is one of the hardest series I have ever seen.
Through the series we follow for several days the good or bad decisions that Dr. Anna Pou and the staff had to make regarding the care and attention of their patients. They were identified as criminals and accused of murdering the people under their care, while they always argued that they were treated with dignity and respect, mitigating their pain.
Source available on Apple TV+ Vera Farmiga plays Dr. Anna Pou
The central character of the miniseries is Dr. Anna Pou, who is played on screen by Vera Farmiga. Among her works as an actress, we saw her in the movie Hasta los ojos and the saga El conjuro.
I swore it was the protagonist of the X files, Dana Scully, I looked like her.
Those five days in that hospital in New Orleans, gives us different points of view of what happened there. The director of the series does not choose one side or one person over the other, but they try to understand the logic, the decisions and the different emotions of each of the main actors in a very critical moment and total chaos.
The worst conditions imaginable happened in that hospital, no electricity to maintain air conditioning, no ventilators or monitors to work, no water, medical staff had to make difficult decisions about which patients to leave first and which to leave last. Some received lethal injections of morphine and painkillers in unclear circumstances.
My personal opinion:
We all know the final result, 17 years have passed since that catastrophic event and the decisions they had to make in such difficult circumstances as giving them a dignified death given the impossibility of evacuating them safely without risking the lives of others.
"After Hurricane Katrina" is not easy to watch, in fact, it is one of the hardest series I have ever seen.
