Wake Up Dead is an extension of the knives out tale, the movie that talks about a murder mystery and how it gets solved. Although this one wasn't the best out of the ones I have seen. The murder had a lot of twists to it, which made it a bit too complicated. When the movie gets too difficult, it cut me off guard. Just like some movies are simply for chilling, you just watch and feel relaxed, others demand your undivided attention. Wake Up, Dead Man is that movie.
I had to be fully committed to get a better understanding of what is actually going on. At some point, it was like I got my hand on it, the plot, and what exactly is happening, and there comes another twist that makes it entirely not true to what actually happened.
The movie followed the same storyline plot like the previous Knives Out movies before it. There is a murder, that first essential thing, a group of suspects, up next, a detective who is letting on more than he tells. Also, there was a bit of a difference with this one; it was more of the prime suspect trying to clear his name and working closely with the detective to understand what happened. It is not the entire story that you are exposed to at the beginning of the movie, as you progress in watching the movie, more gets revealed to you. A major aspect of the movie is its unveiling of the truth about what truly happened at the end of the movie to the person who was killed. This is what kept me watching the movie even when I did not want to anymore.
There was a bit of character development in the aspect of the murdered person. What led to his death, and first, you have to understand who he was. He was a reverend father whose way of preaching the gospel was out of the ordinary compared to the way Catholic fathers preach. He was all about condemnation and punishment, all in the name of fishing out the sinful ones. He did it in a way that his congregation was reduced, and the ones who stood with him stayed out of fear.
The plot became twisted so that each character came with flaws that singled them out as a prime suspect. One with a drinking problem, another hoping for a miracle, one righteous, and one with a lost cause. Nothing was more out of the ordinary than the fact that these unique eccentrics made them out to be suspects. That's the interesting part about the movie. It wasn't glamorous for these characters because one thing they all had in common was being a member of the church and a believer in whatever the murdered father had to preach.
The too many complications in the unraveling of the plot got me confused about how the father was actually killed and not who did, but rather how they did. These things happen when the movie gets too twisted, all for the sake of mystery. The mystery in the movie wasn't all bad; what cut it off for me was when it got too much. Every act came with a twist, and every twist led to another twist. Overall, it is still a nice movie to watch if you love murder mysteries like me.
