I Lost My Body, released in 2019, is an animated French film, directed by Jeremy Clapin. The casts of the film are Dev Patel, Victoire du Bois, Alia Shawkat and many more. The film won the César Award for Best Animated Film (2020), New York Film Critics Circle Award for Best Animated Film (2019) etc.

I've watched this film a while ago and even though I was planning to write about it right after I was done, I just couldn’t. I kind of felt like I missed something or I failed to understand something important. The film took an unique approach, showing the adventures and finding the way back to the place it belonged through the mutilated hands perspective and honestly I enjoyed it. We get to see bits of the past through the remembrance of the mutilated hand and by the end of it, get a clear understanding of the whole situation. The film introduced us to this character Naoufel, who went through some rough ups and downs in life, fell in love and at some point lost a hand. But the story is more than that, it also tells an underlying metaphoric story and I am frustrated for not clearly understand that. I’ve created like around five theories but none of them have a satisfying explanation.

One of the frustrating things was not being able to pinpoint the role of this fly. I think it represents a missing dot, connecting a chain of events, or a thread, pulling all the strings of this universe, but who knows, maybe I am wrong.

"Say you are walking peacefully, You pretend to go one way, but you make a feint like a dribble, you deviate, and boom! You jump on the crane, something you would never do, you shouldn’t be doing but you did it anyway because it was right, it got you somewhere else and you don’t regret it. And once you fooled destiny, you don’t let it catch up to you. You run blindly and keep your fingers crossed."

That’s my favorite quote and can also be used as a summary of the film. I think what bothered me most is not being able to understand what I felt at the end scene of this film. Anyway, It's an unique animation film, if you are into animated films, do check it out.

I didn't try to find any metaphors personally, and if there are any, they clearly eluded me. But I loved the film for two reasons—

    1. The sense of alienation and being out of place, trying to keep on living by the threads.
    2. The amazing animation. I was awestruck with some of the shots they managed to do. For example, when the severed hand falls down and almost gets crushed by the train.
