Come di consueto oggi vi porto dentro una nuova Anteprima di un articolo che fra qualche giorno o settimana vedrete Nella Mente di un SerialFiller, il mio blog interamente incentrato sul mondo delle serie tv e di cui, da qualche mese, ho deciso di regalarvi costantemente, in anticipo su quello che pubblicherò, gran parte dei post che vedrete su www.serialfiller.org.

Shining Girls è l'ennesima, e dico ennesima serie tv di Apple TV Plus capace di sorprendere, o quantomeno non deludere. D'altronde, quando piazzi un volto come Elisabeth Moss nel cast la probabilità che tu possa fallire è più bassa della probabilità di cadere in un tombino la mattina mentre ti rechi in metropolitana. Ebbene, anche questa volta il gioco delle probabilità non si smentisce e Shining Girls, soprattutto grazie ad Elisabeth Moss (ma non solo grazie ad essa), non delude.

Tratta dall'omonimo romanzo di Lauren Bekes, Shining Girls è una serie thriller ma contaminata da molti altri generi quali, ad esempio, quello fantascientifico e paranormale, o almeno è quello che lascia intendere il pilot dello show. Accanto ad una indifesa e traumatizzata Elisabeth Moss, che interpreta Kirby, protagonista di tutta la storia, vi è un irriconoscibile Wagner Moura, memorabile interprete di Pablo Escobar in Narcos. Credo che ciascuno di noi, abituati a vederlo con baffoni e panza di ordinanza, abbia faticato non poco ad individuare il suo volto dietro quello di Dan, giornalista in declino che, un po' per caso, finisce per imbattarsi in una vicenda di cronaca nera dai contorni misteriosi, vicenda che, in qualche modo, si intreccerà con il drammatico passato di Kirby, vittima di una brutale aggressione avvenuta circa 6 anni prima degli eventi narrati.

Il fascino della serie, però, risiede nel mistero che alcuni passaggi dell'episodio pilota riescono a generare.

Kirby ci viene mostrata, più di una volta, intenta a leggere e trascrivere frasi basiche e di contesto (del suo contesto) su un quaderno. Il nome di un gatto, la descrizione di una tazza, la contestualizzazione di una stanza e cosi via. Elementi apparentemente sconnessi ma che ritornano prepotentemente a materializzarsi durante il pilot. Ed è sempre durante questo intenso episodio che assistiamo ad uno sballottamento della protagonista da un luogo (e da un tempo?) all'altro, quasi come se essa fosse vittima di incredibili vuoti cognitivi e/o di salti temporali indefiniti.

In definitiva, le prime impressioni su Shining Girls sono assolutamente positive, non entusiastiche ma positive. I prossimi episodi ci diranno se ci troveremo di fronte ad una buona serie ma che potrebbe subire l'effetto "Stephen King" (buoni propositi ma implosione narrativa) o di fronte ad una delle migliori serie dell'anno. Elisabeth Moss ed Apple hanno da sempre dimostrato di essere sinonimo di garanzia. Lo saranno anche stavolta?

Are you running out of decent thrillers to follow?

Shining Girls is yet another, and I mean yet another Apple TV Plus TV series that is capable of surprising, or at least not disappointing. Then again, when you place a face like Elisabeth Moss in the cast, the likelihood of you failing is lower than the likelihood of falling down a manhole in the morning on your way to the subway. Well, once again the game of probability does not fail and Shining Girls, mainly thanks to Elisabeth Moss (but not only thanks to her), does not disappoint.

Based on the novel of the same name by Lauren Bekes, Shining Girls is a thriller series but contaminated by many other genres such as, for example, science fiction and paranormal, or at least that's what the pilot of the show suggests. Next to a helpless and traumatized Elisabeth Moss, who plays Kirby, the protagonist of the whole story, there is an unrecognizable Wagner Moura, memorable interpreter of Pablo Escobar in Narcos. I think that each of us, accustomed to seeing him with a mustache and belly of order, has struggled to identify his face behind that of Dan, declining journalist who, a bit 'by chance, ends up running into an affair of crime from the mysterious contours, an affair that, in some way, will be intertwined with the dramatic past of Kirby, the victim of a brutal attack occurred about 6 years before the events narrated. The discovery of a corpse, that of Julia Madrigal, in the basement of the city of Chicago, will bring out a connection between this murder and Kirby's past. The charm of the series, however, lies in the mystery that some passages of the pilot episode manage to generate. 3 big questions surface during the show's first hour:

Kirby is shown, more than once, reading and transcribing basic and contextual sentences (of her context) on a notebook. The name of a cat, the description of a cup, the contextualization of a room and so on. Elements that are apparently disconnected but that come back powerfully to materialize during the pilot. And it is always during this intense episode that we witness a jolting of the protagonist from one place (and time?) to another, almost as if she were the victim of incredible cognitive gaps and / or indefinite time jumps. The mystery man, whose name we still don't know, is instead the protagonist of important scenes that determine his importance. The wingless bee, the link with Julia, the appearance that is always the same despite his continuous travels in different and distant eras, make this intriguing character a question mark, and at the same time a fundamental reference, that I believe we will carry on throughout the season. All in all, my first impressions of Shining Girls are absolutely positive, not enthusiastic but positive. The next episodes will tell us if we will be faced with a good series but that could suffer the "Stephen King" effect (good intentions but narrative implosion) or in front of one of the best series of the year. Elisabeth Moss and Apple have always proved to be synonymous with guarantee. Will they be again this time?
