Foundation ha diviso il pubblico e la critica più di ogni altra serie nel 2021 (non a caso la trovate fra le serie tv più chiacchierate del 2021). La rabbia dei fan dei romanzi di Isaac Asimov ha lasciato spazio allo stupore degli spettatori più disinteressati, gli interrogativi sul binario parallelo sul quale si muoveva la narrazione della serie rispetto ai libri, ha fatto posto al bagliore visivo che molti episodi hanno regalato. Nel mezzo tanta filosofia, forse diversa da quella dei libri, tanta azione, forse più jamesbondiana che nei libri, bei personaggi, verso meno iconici che nei libri, e tanti piccoli errori. Foudantion è stata la contraddizione fatta serie, eppure alla fin dei conti male non è andata.

Per chi non lo sapesse, Foundation è la serie evento di Apple TV Plus tratta dai romanzi di Isaac Asimov noti come "Il Ciclo delle fondazioni". Sempre per chi non conoscesse Asimov, basti pensare che egli è considerato per certi versi il padre della fantascienza e della robotica (notissime le sue leggi della robotica) e negli anni ha raccolto cosi tanti apprezzamenti dai suoi lettori da poter essere considerato alla stregua di un guru, di un messia, di un profeta. Il Ciclo delle fondazioni è forse la sua opera più nota e complessa, foriera com'è di avventura, impassibile mistero, saggezza, filosofia ed interrogativi antichissimi sul mondo, sull'universo e sull'essere umano. David S.Goyer è stato il primo pazzo ad offrirsi come colui che avrebbe trasposto in televisione un'opera cosi vasta, imponente e riconosciuta. Come sempre accade in questi casi, la folla è sempre pronta a lanciare arance e pomodori, silurare autori e protagonisti, distruggere scelte ed errori eventuali. Ed è, purtroppo, quello che in minima parte è successo a Goyer. Il roboante e stupendo pilot (di cui vi avevo parlato qui) è ben presto diventato un ricordo. I tanti genderswap (di cui non capirò mai il senso pur capendone l'importante messaggio che si vorrebbe lasciare, ma questa è un'altra storia) hanno disorientato i lettori dei libri, insieme a dei cambiamenti sostanziali che hanno spiazzato chi conosceva una storia e si è poi trovato di fronte ad un adattamento televisivo abbastanza libero. A questo si è aggiunto un soffermarsi molto poco su una figura centrale come quella di Hari Seldon (Jared Harris) ed assai tanto su scene di azione sicuramente di alto livello ma sempre troppo dislocate rispetto all'anima dei romanzi. Molta importanza è stata data a figura si centrali ma non cosi tanto da giustificare quello spazio che hanno trovato nella serie. Parlo di Salvor Hardin e Gaal Dornick, personaggi cruciali ma che forse andavano messi maggiormente sullo sfondo rispetto a quanto è stato fatto. Sia Hardin che Dornick "subiscono" un cambio di genere rispetto ai personaggi dei romanzi, fatto che oltre a spaesare i lettori sembra essere il manifesto di uno show che voleva raccontare qualcosa di scritto nel 1951, appiattendolo su usi, costumi, visione culturale dominante dei nostri tempi. Operazione legittima ma molto poco riuscita.

Apple TV Plus subscribers, satisfied or refunded?

Foundation has divided audiences and critics more than any other series in 2021 (not surprisingly, you can find it among the most talked about TV series of 2021). The anger of the fans of Isaac Asimov's novels has given way to the amazement of the more disinterested viewers, the questions about the parallel track on which the narrative of the series moved compared to the books, has made way for the visual glow that many episodes have given. In between there was a lot of philosophy, perhaps different from that of the books, a lot of action, perhaps more Jamesbondian than in the books, beautiful characters, towards less iconic than in the books, and many small mistakes. Foudantion was the contradiction made series, but at the end of the day it was not bad.

For those who don't know, Foundation is the Apple TV Plus event series based on Isaac Asimov's novels known as "The Foundation Cycle". Also for those who do not know Asimov, suffice it to say that he is considered in some ways the father of science fiction and robotics (his laws of robotics are well known) and over the years has garnered so much praise from his readers that he can be considered a guru, a messiah, a prophet. The Cycle of Foundations is perhaps his best known and most complex work, full of adventure, impassive mystery, wisdom, philosophy and ancient questions about the world, the universe and the human being. David S. Goyer was the first fool to offer himself as the one who would have transposed on television such a vast, impressive and recognized work. As always happens in these cases, the crowd is always ready to throw oranges and tomatoes, torpedo authors and protagonists, destroy choices and mistakes. And it is, unfortunately, what has happened to Goyer. The bombastic and stupendous pilot (which I told you about here) soon became a memory. The many genderswaps (of which I will never understand the meaning even if I understand the important message that you want to leave, but that's another story) have disoriented the readers of the books, along with substantial changes that have displaced those who knew a story and then found themselves faced with a television adaptation quite free. To this we have to add a very little focus on a central figure such as Hari Seldon (Jared Harris) and a lot of action scenes certainly high level but always too dislocated from the soul of the novels. Much importance was given to central figures but not so much to justify the space they found in the series. I'm talking about Salvor Hardin and Gaal Dornick, crucial characters but perhaps they should have been put more in the background than they were. Both Hardin and Dornick "undergo" a change of genre compared to the characters of the novels, a fact that in addition to confusing readers seems to be the manifesto of a show that wanted to tell something written in 1951, flattening it on customs, habits, cultural vision dominant in our time. Legitimate operation but very unsuccessful.
