There are myths and legends we've heard about since childhood, stories that populate our minds year after year by osmosis without us really realizing it.
Stories of our own without having the slightest idea of what events have increased the myth, certainties born from hearsay, certainties without depth that grow day after day like water in an empty bucket left in the rain.
It's nice to discover then what are really the roots of these stories, of these heroes and in today's era it often happens that it is the cinema that gives us the answers we are looking for.
One example is the recent film by Janus Metz, which tells the story of the historic tennis rivalry between J0hn McEnroe and Bjorn Borg.
Eccentricity versus normality.

A duel in every respect for two dichotomous athletes like few others.
The film tells in particular of what happened in the 1980 Wimbledon tournament with Borg at the height of his career and in search of yet another triumph on London's green earth and McEnroe in search of a place among the greats after making the world understand that he is more than just a brawler yelling at the chair judge. Both arrived at that tournament loaded and in dazzling form and for the insiders there would be no other final than the one between the 2 protagonists of the film with Borg clearly favored over the American.
The film tells the story of those sports events leaving us for almost half the duration on the tennis court but it draws strength from the psychological deepening of the 2 as distant in the collective imagination as similar in the way we live tennis as if it were the most important thing in the universe.
Behind the Swedish machine there is a world of paranoia, tics, neurasthenia while behind the tranquility, verbal violence, John's excesses hide a thousand psychological uncertainties and microdramas that never allow him to take the decisive step to greatness.
The final phase of the film is all about that legendary final of the 80's but we who live in 2019 know that regardless of how that final ended the 2 champions have occupied and occupy a place in the Olympus of tennis with broken records, slam victories, numerous masters and a vivid image in the minds of all fans.
Borg vs McEnroe is a film for fans, very enjoyable and well made that can certainly reserve surprises and that healthy deepening that in this type of film can only be welcome.

Entrambi arrivarono a quel torneo carichissimi ed in forma smagliante e per gli addetti ai lavori non ci sarebbe stata altra finale se non quella fra i 2 protagonisti del film con Borg nettamente favorito sull'americano.
Il film narra di quelle vicende sportive lasciandoci per quasi la metà della durata sul campo da tennis ma trae forza dall'approfondimento psicologico dei 2 tanto distanti nell'immaginario collettivo quanto simili nel modo di vivere il tennis come se fosse la cosa più importante nell'universo.
Dietro la macchina svedese vi è un mondo di paranoie, tic, nevrastenie mentre dietro la tranquillità, la violenza verbale, gli eccessi di John si nascondono mille incertezze e microdrammi psicologici che mai gli consentono di fare lo step decisivo per la grandezza.
La fase finale del film è tutta per quella leggendaria finale dell'80 ma noi che viviamo nel 2019 sappiamo che a prescindere da come sia andata a finire quella finale i 2 campioni hanno occupato ed occupano un posto nell'olimpo del tennis con record infranti, vittorie agli slam, numerosi master ed un immagine vivida nella mente di tutti gli appassionati.
Borg vs McEnroe è un film per appassionati, molto godibile e ben fatto che di certo può riservare sorprese e quel sano approfondimento che in questo tipo di film non può che essere ben accetto.
