Not just Netflix. Even Amazon has been trying for some years now to bully its way into the film world that matters. A different strategy perhaps, made of fewer titles but with more investment on the single product. It was for TV series and it seems that Bezos wants to repeat the same pattern with cinema too. Among many big productions in the pipeline, however, there is a film that we could almost define as independent cinema. Gus Van Sant uses the inspiration of Joaquin Phoenix to tell the story of the descent and rise of the life of cartoonist John Callahan, brilliant and irreverent cartoonist from Oregon who between the 80s and 90s became famous for some of his cartoons.
But John's story is far from classic and normal. Van Sant tells us the tragic story of this boy who had to go through hell to find his place in the world. A dramatic story, however, that has the strength of great stories, the ones that allow you to find in pain and misfortune the right drive to accelerate the process of growth and awareness that every truly mature person should be able to carry out sooner or later. John has always been an alcoholic. A boy without a mother, who had abandoned him as a child. A boy who had problems with his father and soon found himself totally alone in the sea of life. Alcohol as a means to stifle his emotions, his anger. A way like any other to stay asleep, to live eternally numb and be able to feel nothing. A car accident will save his life. He will be paralyzed, but thanks to that wheelchair he will start to fly. That tragic event will awaken him from his torpor and put him in front of his gift. John emerges thanks to his disability that will force him to come to terms with his past, with his fears, with his anxieties, with his pains. A path in 12 steps that will allow him to emerge from the ashes like a modern phoenix. He will become a successful cartoonist but above all he will be able to ask for forgiveness and above all to forgive himself for all the time he wasted hating and canceling himself. A very powerful film, signed by a director too often forgotten and played by an actor who with the Joker will finally receive the final consecration.
Non solo Netflix. Anche Amazon da qualche anno sta provado ad entrare di prepotenza nel mondo cinematografico che conta. Una strategia forse diversa, fatta di meno titoli ma con maggiore investimento sul singolo prodotto. Valeva per le serie tv e sembra che Bezos voglia ripetere lo stesso schema anche con il cinema. Tra tante grandi produzioni in cantiere spunta però un film che potremmo quasi definire da cinema indipendente. Gus Van Sant si serve dell'estro di Joaquin Phoenix per raccontare la storia di discesa e risalita della vita del vignettista John Callahan, brillante ed irriverente disegnatore dell'Oregon che tra gli anni 80 e 90 divenne celebre per alcune sue vignette.
Ma la storia di John è tutt'altro che classica e normale. Van Sant ci racconta la tragica vicenda di questo ragazzo che ha dovuto patire le pene dell'inferno per trovare il suo posto nel mondo. Una vicenda drammatica che ha però la forza delle grandi storie, quelle che ti permettono di trovare nel dolore e nella sfortuna la spinta giusta per accelerare il processo di crescita e consapevolezza che ogni persona veramente matura dovrebbe riuscire a portare in atto prima o poi. John è da sempre stato un'alcolista. Un ragazzo privo di madre, che lo aveva abbandonato da piccolo. Un ragazzo che aveva avuto problemi col padre e che ben presto si era trovato totalmente solo nel mare della vita. Alcol come mezzo per soffocare le proprie emozioni, la propria rabbia. Un modo come un altro per restare addormentato, per vivere perennamente intontito e riuscire a non provare nulla. Sarà un incidente stradale a salvargli la vita. Resterà paralizzato ma grazie a quella sedia a rotelle inizierà a volare. Sarà quel tragico evento a risvegliarlo dal torpore e a metterlo di fronte al suo dono. John emerge grazie alla sua disabilità che lo costringerà a fare i conti col suo passato, con le sue paure, con le sue ansie, con i suoi dolori. Un cammino in 12 passi che gli consentirà di emergere dalle ceneri come una moderna fenice. Diverrà un vignettista di successo ma soprattutto riuscirà a chiedere perdono e soprattutto a perdonarsi per tutto il tempo sprecato ad odiarsi ed annullarsi. Un film molto potente, firmato da un regista troppo spesso dimenticato ed interpretato da un attore che con il Joker riceverà finalmente la consacrazione definitiva.
