Pierferdinando Diliberto's first film experience, known as PIF, generated great enthusiasm. His "Mafia kills only in summer" had surprised everyone. A light and amusing almost documentary drama in which the journalist, activist, actor, director managed to talk about the mafia, the fight against the mafia and the years of mafia terror with great lightness. He had ridiculed the mobsters depriving them of the usual aura of terror that has always enveloped them and trying to raise awareness about how dangerous those years were and how much the sacrifices of Falcone, Borsellino and hundreds of other statesmen should not be forgotten .
With his second work Pif tries again. Light tone and clenched faces to make us aware of another great story to remember. This time, Italy has the right to do, it comes out as a victim, in a shameful historical event that is born in Sicily, still its Sicily, but that has its roots overseas in the country that for decades has been forged as the leading country in theme of freedom, democracy and law.
"In Guerra per amore" is Pif's latest work and takes us back to the Second World War, particularly at the time of the American landing in Sicily.
American forces managed to enter the European continent from Italy. But how? Unable to do so thanks to their experiences and knowledge they had to use the help of the strongest apparatus in Italy: the mafia. Lucky Luciano as ambassador and the Sicilian mafia to act as a privileged channel for the conquest of Mussolini's Italy towards Nazi Germany. It seems madness yet it seems to be the most solid historical reconstruction. The film focuses on a crucial point. The mafia helped the Americans is true. But at what price? The price was paid, and still paid, by the whole of Italy. Men of honor found themselves from being criminals to being mayors, city councilors, party secretaries, local and national administrators. America had to place trusted men in strategic places to prevent Mussolini from succeeding in subjugating the country again. The debt to the mafia was thus paid and since then the mafia infiltration in Italy has always been the rule. Thank you, therefore, America for having freed us from a dictatorship and for having delivered us to the strongest criminal association in the world. The topic is very interesting and the analysis that makes it PIf is as always lucid. The film, however, lacks a soul, lacks the flashes that had characterized its first work, leaving a good idea to be partly ruined by an unconvincing staging.
