The waves are overwhelming and we don't know where they started.
Waves that overwhelm politics, society, music.
TV is no exception and so every couple of years there seem to be themes, settings that suddenly take over.
Until a couple of years ago it seemed that everything revolved around the existential malaises of the generation of thirty-year-olds.
Before that there was a time when everything and everyone was looking for something that even vaguely resembled Lost, then something that resembled True Detective, before that there was the golden age when Walter White and Don Draper took over.
Today it seems that many people want to try their hand at being or imagining how heaven works, understood as the place where God reigns, rules and moves the threads of the world.
The Good Place" had done it in others with very bad results and today we try again a nice and funny little FX series called Miracle Workers.
Heaven becomes Heaven Inc., angels become mere employees and God becomes a lazy and inadequate "daddy's son" who almost out of boredom and for fun creates a questionable and failed planet like the earth, populating it with imperfect and masochistic beings like humans.
In the role of "God" Steve Buscemi, a multifaceted and multifaceted actor like few others who ranges between comic and dramatic roles with incredible ease.
Buscemi's God is an Illiterate, Arrogant, Touchy, Vengeful, Bored, Inept and totally out of this world.
A God who would like to be idolized, who does not have the interest of his own creatures at heart but only his own, a God who is losing "followers" and who is beginning to fear the idea of destroying the world and human beings to devote himself to other activities.
Interesting how from this point of view the most recent comedy series are able to scratch much more than the dramatic ones. The Earth is portrayed as a place inhabited by beings who are not only imperfect but above all selfish and ignorant, beings who have destroyed their own home and don't have the vaguest idea of how to remedy or even don't want to do so, letting everything explode and end little by little.
They are no other than the mirror of their creator, a God who is lazy and vain, ignorant or even illiterate, who acts out of pleasure and vanity without ever thinking about the consequences.
A vision of divinity in contrast with the classical one that would see our creator as an omniscient, good and selfless being always able to discriminate between good and evil, between right and wrong.
Needless to say that being "Miracle Workers" a comedy everything is pushed towards a very grotesque and parodyistic side of God, earth, heaven and all men. In doing so, however, the series offers various food for thought.
In fact, the employees are nothing but classic employees who will try to perform some small good deed, some miracle without ever affecting, without ever leaving their mark, without ever really changing the world.
A series that fits in the wake of that wave we were talking about at the beginning and that seems to have in The Good Place and Miracle Workers the most noble exponents.
7 episodes of 20 minutes to recover an excellent first season, fun and full of good ideas.
You don't need a miracle to recover it.
Le ondate travolgono e non si sa da dove esse siano iniziate.
Ondate che travolgono la politica, la società, la musica.
Anche la tv non fa eccezione e cosi ogni paio di anni sembrano esserci dei temi, delle ambientazioni che improvvisamente prendono il sopravvento.
Fino a un paio di anni fa sembrava che tutto ruotasse intorno ai malesseri esistenziali della generazione dei trentenni.
Prima ancora vi era stato un periodo in cui tutto e tutti erano alla ricerca di qualcosa che somigliasse anche vagamente a Lost, poi qualcosa che somigliasse a True Detective, prima ancora ci fu il periodo d'oro in cui I Walter White ed i Don Draper presero il sopravvento.
Oggi sembra che in molti vogliano cimentarsi ad essere o ad immaginare come funzioni il paradiso, inteso come luogo in cui Dio regna, governa e muove i fili del mondo.
Lo aveva fatto "The Good Place" ci hanno provato in altri con risultati pessimi ed oggi ci riprova una bella e divertente piccola serie targata FX dal titolo Miracle Workers.
Il paradiso diventa Heaven Inc., gli angeli diventano meri impiegati e Dio diventa uno svogliato ed inadeguato "figlio di papà" che quasi per noia e per gioco crea un pianeta discutibile e fallimentare come la terra, popolandolo di esseri imperfetti e masochisti come gli umani.
Nei panni di "Dio" Steve Buscemi, attore variopinto e poliedrico come pochi che spazia tra ruoli comici e drammatici con disinvoltura incredibile.
Il Dio di Buscemi è un Dio Analfabeta, Arrogante, Permaloso, Vendicativo, Annoiato, Inetto e totalmente fuori dal mondo.
Un Dio che vorrebbe essere idolatrato, che non ha cuore l'interesse delle proprie creature ma solo il proprio, un Dio che sta perdendo "followers" e che inizia a paventare l'idea di distruggere il mondo e gli esseri umani per dedicarsi ad attività altre.
Interessante come da questo punto di vista le serie comedy più recenti riescano a graffiare molto più d quelle drammatiche. La Terra viene ritratta come un luogo abitata da esseri non solo imperfetti ma soprattutto egoisti ed ignoranti, esseri che hanno distrutto la propria casa e non hanno la più vaga idea di come porre rimedio o addirittura non hanno voglia di farlo, lasciando che tutto esploda e finisca a poco a poco.
Essi non sono altri che lo specchio del loro creatore, un Dio appunto pigro e vanitoso, ignorante o addirittura analfabeta che per diletto e vanità agisce senza mai pensare alle conseguenze.
Una visione della divinità in contrapposizione con quella classica che vedrebbe invece il nostro creatore come essere onniscente, buono e altruista sempre in grado di discriminare fra il bene ed il male, tra il giusto e l'errato.
Inutile dire che essendo "Miracle Workers" una comedy tutto viene spinto verso un lato molto grottesco e parodistico di Dio, della terra, del paradiso e degli uomini tutti. Nel farlo però la serie offre vari spunti di riflessione.
I dipendenti infatti non sono altro che classici impiegati che proveranno a compiere qualche piccola buona azione, qualche miracolo appunto senza incidere mai, senza lasciare mai il segno, senza cambiare davvero mai il mondo.
Una serie che si inserisce nel solco di quell'ondata di cui parlavamo all'inizio e che sembra avere in The Good Place e Miracle Workers gli esponenti più nobili.
7 episodi da 20 minuti per recuperare una prima stagione ottima, divertente e piena di ottimi spunti.
Non serve un miracolo per recuperarla.
