3 Oscars: as best film, best director, best actress. Nomadland was the film of the year? Hailed by critics. Much discussed. Unanimously appreciated. Disney Plus has offered us the opportunity to see it from home, comfortably, streaming. So let's dive into this Chloe Zhao film starring the great Frances McDormand. Let's say it right now. Nomadland is a fine, important film, but it's not an Oscar movie. Never in a lifetime. Super slow film that never seems to want to go anywhere. That said. Can a movie, objectively boring, be a good movie? Yes. But it can not be a masterpiece. Movies, trivializing, have 2 main functions: to entertain and to generate reflections, emotions. Nomadland genre a lot of reflections on the human condition today but generates no sense of entertainment and few emotions. The theme? There are many, and all very very important. In a chaotic and hurried world, there is no room for meditation on one's condition, no room for slowness, no room for nonconformity. We are all consumers before we are human beings. If you don't consume, you don't exist. And so being nomadic means first of all being invisible. Being homeless is a luxury that we cannot afford. To be cohesive and sincere with one's neighbor is an existential essentialism that does not work in today's society. It's a very powerful message that Chloe Zhao delivers, one that weighs heavily, especially in these times. The direction is careful and forcibly bucolic, but still not Oscar-worthy. McDormand, on the other hand, gives a performance that is Oscar-worthy. I love cinema and I've seen a lot of very slow movies, often considering them masterpieces. Not this time. Rated 6.5-7. No more than that.
