In the very varied offer of our Mrs. Netflix there is a niche title that has been able to exalt itself to the point of winning important nominations as well as a cumbersome thematic comparison that has managed to support only partially. We're talking about Ozark series produced, directed in some episodes and starring Jason Bateman, a reassuring good guy's face seen mostly in a dozen good comedies or movies with a background lightness that in this series never shines through. And this is one of the weaknesses of the series, too busy creating pathos and drama to remember to cheer through characters that could act as comic reliefs. Another disadvantage of the series is the comparison I was talking about before, the one with Breaking Bad. About ten years ago there was the race for the series that was somehow the heir of Lost, today all chasing Breaking Bad and from Orange Is The New Black, The House of Paper to this Ozark immediately snaps the juxtaposition. The reason? As soon as we are faced with an ordinary man, a non criminal, forced to be a criminal, our minds immediately turn to Walter White aka Heisenberg. Thematically, the comparison is all there, but it ends there. There isn't that thickness, there isn't that construction, that ascending climax that brings us inside the soul of the protagonist justifying step by step the nefariousness to which he is forced. It must be said, however, that if there is a series that can claim this approach, it is Ozark. Putting aside this cumbersome comparison the series has managed in only 2 seasons to create its own atmosphere, its own identity. If the first season was nothing short of dazzling, a surprise able to attract the attention of insiders and not, the second season has continued along the same lines, expanding the mythology of the series, inserting new recurring characters and especially focusing the focus of action and introspection no longer only on the shoulders of Marty Byrde (Jason Bateman) but especially on his wife Wendy, played by a very solid Laura Linney. It's on her that the darkest clouds thicken and it's to her that the task of closing the season with a cliffangher as anticlimatic as it is surprising. The lightning bolts that we admired in the first season became even brighter in the second season with a Bateman in full form even behind the camera, who performed in sequence plans, long and very long fields and absolute level trolleys. The leaden atmosphere of Lake Ozark and the typicality of its inhabitants did the rest, giving the series an ever more marked recognition. Despite these triumphant premises, it must be said that the second season of Ozark has left more than a few doubts. In the face of an enviable care for characters and their introspection there was a clear desire to accelerate, surprise and break into the plot with foolish choices and unforgivable mistakes. The general sensation is that we wanted to focus everything on a story that was necessarily drifting adrift, with often pretentious twists and continuous zeroing of the various storylines. Particularly embarrassing was the reference to the cliffangher of the eighth episode where, as if by magic, the twist that had closed that episode was cancelled, making the viewer doubt the goodness of the scriptwriters' choices. A strong mockery for the spectator to which it was not enough to resort to a strong suspension of disbelief, a tool to which one is often accustomed in series of this kind but which here has been put to the test over and over again. Too many useless accelerations, too many pretentious sacrifices, too many deaths without a worthy construction and little care in the development of the actions of secondary characters including all members of the cartel and the Snell couple. In spite of this, however, an honorable mention must be made both for the scriptwriters and above all for Julia Garner, who plays Ruth Langmore. After this stratospheric interpretation we can say without a doubt that a star has been born. The second season has therefore been shelved and between ups and downs we expect a third one where problems will continue to torment the Byrde family, now sucked into a vortex of violence and crime from which they have not been able to get out, or rather, they did not want to get out.

Nella variegatissima offerta di nostra signora Netflix vi è da qualche anno un titolo di nicchia che ha saputo però esaltarsi al punto da conquistare anche nomination importanti nonchè un paragone tematico ingombrante che è riuscito a sostenere solo in parte. Stiamo parlando di Ozark serie prodotta, diretta in alcuni episodi e recitata da Jason Bateman, faccione rassicurante da bravo ragazzo visto per lo più in una decina di buone comedy o film improntati comunque su una leggerezza di fondo che in questa serie non traspare mai. Ed è questo uno dei punti di debolezza della serie, troppo impegnata a creare pathos e dramma per ricordarsi di allegerire attraverso personaggi che potessero fungere da comic reliefs. Altro punto in sfavore della serie è il paragone di cui parlavo prima ovvero quello con Breaking Bad. Una decina di anni fa vi era la corsa alla serie che fosse in qualche modo l'erede di Lost, oggi tutti rincoronno Breaking Bad e da Orange Is The New Black, La casa di Carta a questo Ozark subito scatta l'accostamento. Il motivo? Appena ci troviamo di fronte ad un uomo comune, un non criminale, costretto a fare il criminale parte subito la mente verso Walter White aka Heisenberg. Tematicamente il paragone ci sta tutto ma finisce li. Non c'è quello spessore, non c'è quella costruzione, quel climax ascendente che ci porta dentro l'animo del protagonista giustificando passo dopo passo le nefandezze a cui è costretto. C'è da dire però che se c'è una serie che può rivendicare questo accostamento essa è Ozark. Mettendo da parte questo ingombrante paragone la serie è riuscita in sole 2 stagione a crearsi una propria atmosfera, una propria identità. Se la prima stagione era stata a dir poco folgorante, una sorpresa in grado di calamitare l'attenzione di addetti ai lavori e non, la seconda ha proseguito sulla stessa falsariga ampliando la mitologia della serie, inserendo nuovi personaggi ricorrenti e soprattutto concentrando il focus dell'azione e dell'introspezione non più solo sulle spalle di Marty Byrde (Jason Bateman) ma soprattutto sulla sua sposa Wendy, interpretata da una solidissima Laura Linney. E' su di lei che si addensano le nubi più cupe ed è a lei che viene demandato il compito di chiudere la stagione con un cliffangher tanto anticlimatico quanto sorprendente. I lampi registici che avevamo ammirato nella prima stagione sono diventati ancora più brillanti nella seconda con un Bateman in formissima anche dietro la macchina da presa, che si è esibito in piani sequenza, campi lunghi e lunghissimi e carrellate di livello assoluto. L'atmosfera plumbea del lago Ozark e la tipicità dei suoi abitanti hanno fatto il resto, conferendo alla serie una riconoscibilità sempre più marcata. Nonostante queste premesse trionfali c'è da dire che la seconda stagione di Ozark ha lasciato più di qualche perplessità. A fronte di una cura invidiabile per personaggi e loro introspezione vi è stata una palese voglia di accelerare, sorprendere e irrompere nella trama con delle scelte dissennate ed errori imperdonabili. La sensazione generale è che si sia voluto puntare tutto su una storia che stesse andando necessariamente alla deriva, con colpi di scena spesso pretestuosi e continui azzeramenti delle varie storyline. Particolarmente imbarazzante il richiamo al cliffangher dell'ottava puntata dove come per magia si è annullato il colpo di scena che aveva chiuso quell'episodio facendo dubitare lo spettatore della bontà delle scelte degli sceneggiatori. Una forte presa in giro per lo spettatore a cui non è bastato ricorrere ad una forte sospensione dell'incredulità, strumento a cui si è spesso abituati in serie del genere ma che qui è stata messa a dura prova più e più volte. Troppe accelerazioni inutili, troppi sacrifici pretestuosi, troppe morti senza una costruzione degna e poca cura nello sviluppo delle azioni dei personaggi secondari tra cui tutti i membri del cartello e i coniugi Snell. A dispetto di ciò va però fatta una menzione d'onore sia per gli sceneggiatori ma soprattutto per Julia Garner, interprete di Ruth Langmore. Dopo questa stratosferica interpretazione possiamo affermare senza dubbio che è nata una stella. La seconda stagione è stata dunque archiviata e tra alti e bassi si attende una terza dove i problemi continueranno a tormentare la famiglia Byrde, oramai risucchiata in un vortice di violenza e criminalità dalla quale non sono riusciti ad uscire o meglio, non hanno voluto uscire.
