There's no point in going around it. If we had to decide which genre in cinema and TV has attracted the most revenue and produced more films and TV series, this would certainly be the superhero genre. It's been 10 years since Kevin Feige and Marvel launched the huge Marvel Cinematic Universe project. From the first Iron Man until today we've seen it all. 23 Marvel movies, the more or less expanded universe of DC Comics, a Disney channel coming with many Marvel series on the launch pad, the Marvel/Netflix collaboration, the Deadpool phenomenon, the arrowverse on CW, the X-Men saga and many other more or less isolated products, until the next highly anticipated HBO Watchmen. Amazon first video had tried to characterize itself with a very special offer from the beginning with The Tick, where the genre was overturned proposing an unlikely and very dysfunctional hero. The 90's load arrived however a few weeks ago when Bezos' platform launched "The Boys", a transposition of the homonymous comic book and already become a cult for serial fans. The series tells of a world where superheroes are customs cleared and are in the hands of multinationals. Thanks to them, targeted marketing campaigns are launched, stories to tell, the lives of superheroes at the mercy of the public and companies are artfully created. Superheroes are nothing more than new stars, equal or superior to Hollywood actors, sports champions or star models. There are no secret identities and on the contrary they are hosted in the shows and are available to shoot selfie and sign autographs. Everything we have always seen and known about superheroes so far is therefore completely overturned and going on with the minutes we discover that heroes are not only puppets in the hands of multinationals but even real bastards, fallacious men, greedy but at the same time very fragile and indoctrinated. An event will upset the life of Hughie, a very ordinary and decent boy who will see his beloved die before his eyes by one of the 7 most famous superheroes on the planet. Butcher will contact Hughie, instilling in him the doubt that what happened to his beloved was not a collateral damage resulting from the heroic act of A-Train but a recurring "mistake" of superheroes as heroic as ruthless and above the law. From there unravel events, investigations, insights and struggles between good and evil with constant surprises and an innumerable series of perfectly written characters. The tone of the series is ironic, sarcastic, a bit like Deadpool but with less reference to the comic world from which it derives and more reference to the internal universe it aims to tell. An intelligent way to exalt one's own strength by knocking it down at the same time, disintegrating the topoi of the genre. The Boys is a small masterpiece that destroying everything we love and know about superheroes ends up giving it further strength, further power, widening the horizon and feeding the desire for films and series on the theme.
Inutile girarci intorno. Se dovessimo decretare quale è il genere che al cinema ed in tv ha attirato più introiti ed ha prodotto più film e serie tv questo sarebbe sicuramente il genere supereroistico. Sono passati oramai 10 anni da quando Kevin Feige e la Marvel hanno lanciato il mastodontico progetto del Marvel Cinematic Universe. Dal primo Iron Man ad oggi abbiamo visto di tutto. 23 film Marvel, l'universo più o meno espanso della DC Comics, un canale Disney in arrivo con molte serie Marvel in rampa di lancio, la collaborazione Marvel/Netflix, il fenomeno Deadpool, l'arrowverse su CW, la saga X-Men e tanti altri prodotti più o meno isolati, fino ad arrivare al prossimo attesissimo Watchmen targato HBO. Amazon prime video aveva provato a caratterizzarsi con un'offerta molto particolare sin dall'inizio con The Tick, dove il genere veniva ribaltato proponendo un'eroe improbabile e molto disfunzionale. Il carico da 90 è arrivato però qualche settimana fa quando la piattaforma di Bezos ha lanciato "The Boys", trasposizione dell'omonimo fumetto e già diventato un cult per gli appassionati seriali. La serie racconta di un mondo dove i supereroi sono sdoganati e sono in mano alle multinazionali. Grazie ad essi vengono lanciate campagne di marketing mirate, costruite storie da raccontare, vengono create ad arte le vite dei supereroi alla mercè di pubblico ed aziende. I supereroi non sono altro che dei nuovi divi, pari o superiori ad attori hollywoodiani, campioni sportivi o modelle di grido. Non ci sono identità segrete ed anzi essi vengono ospitati negli show e sono disponibili a scattare selfie e firmare autografi. Tutto quello che abbiamo sempre visto e saputo sui supereroi finora è dunque completamente ribaltato ed andando avanti coi minuti scopriamo che gli eroi non sono solo dei pupazzi in mano alle multinazionali ma addirittura dei veri bastardi, uomini fallaci, avidi ma al tempo stesso fragilissimi ed indottrinati. Un evento sconvolgerà la vita di Hughie, ragazzo comunissimo e per bene che vedrà morire sotto i suoi occhi la propria amata ad opera di uno dei 7 supereroi più famosi del pianeta. Butcher contatterà Hughie, instillandogli il dubbio che quello che capitato alla sua amata non è stato un danno collaterale conseguente all'atto eroico di A-Train ma un "errore" ricorrente di supereroi tanto eroici quanto spietati e al di sopra della legge. Da li si dipaneranno vicende, investigazioni, approfondimenti e lotte fra il bene e il male con sorprese continue e una serie innumerevole di personaggi scritti perfettamente. Il tono della serie è ironico, sarcastico, un pò alla Deadpool ma con meno riferimenti al mondo fumettistico dal quale deriva e più riferimento all'universo interno che si propone di raccontare. Un modo intelligente per esaltare la propria forza abbattendola contestualmente, disintegrando i topoi del genere. The Boys è un piccolo capolavoro che distruggendo tutto quello che amiamo e conosciamo sui supereroi finisce per dargli ulteriore forza, ulteriore potere, allargando l'orizzonte e alimentando la voglia di film e serie sul tema.
