If we were to identify the TV series that more than any other managed to give a cinematic cut to its production, that would undoubtedly be The Crown . The TV series by Peter Morgan, thanks to a very high budget, has succeeded in its 3 seasons to be a turning point for contemporary television productions. The economic, creative and productive effort behind every single episode seemed mammoth. The attention to details, from costumes to the sets, from photography to the mime of the actors has always been incredible. The release of the third season was accompanied by some minor concerns related to recasting. Peter Morgan had in fact decided to set aside the cast that had made him famous in the first 2 seasons to entrust all the main roles to new actors. The time jump made it necessary for other rebel actors to be more in line with characters who had seen the age on the screen advance by a couple of decades to interpret Queen Elizabeth, Prince Philip, young Charles, the rebel Margaret. The great protagonist remains the crown. This rebuilding in the cast also means this. Men and women pass, the crown does not. The symbol counts more than anything else, it goes beyond every actor and character, real or fantasy. That's why replacing Claire Foy with Oscar-winning Olivia Colman, Matt Smith with Tobias Menzies and so on, was not a risky choice, in fact it was a good experiment that gave results beyond all expectations. In particular, Olivia Colman has achieved an exceptional double job. His Elizabeth II not only succeeds in recalling the true queen of England but remembers in her movements and micro expressions her young TV version played by the wonderful Claire Foy. The work of Colman is incredible. Superb. If Menzies somehow manages to make his Filippo evolve the same cannot be said of the character played by Elena Bonhan Carter. She was very good but maybe there is too much discontinuity between her version and that seen in the first 2 seasons. Especially aesthetic differences but also a break and bend different than its young version. Very good, however, Prince Charles played by Ben Daniels.
Se dovessimo individuare la serie tv che più di ogni altra è riuscita a dare un taglio cinematografico alla propria produzione, quella sarebbe senza dubbio The Crown. La serie tv di Peter Morgan, grazie anche ad un budget elevatissimo, è riuscita nelle sue 3 stagioni ad essere un punto di svolta per le produzioni televisive contemporanee. Lo sforzo economico, creativo e produttivo dietro ogni singolo episodio è sembrato mastodontico. L'attenzione ai dettagli, dai costumi alle scenografie, dalla fotografia alla mimica degli attori è stato sempre incredibile. L' uscita della terza stagione è stata accompagnata da qualche piccola perplessità legata al recasting. Peter Morgan aveva infatti deciso di accantonare il cast che lo aveva reso celebre nelle prime 2 stagioni per affidare a nuovi attori tutti i ruoli principali. Il salto temporale rendeva necessario che ad interpretare la Regina Elisabetta, il principe Filippo, il giovane Carlo, la ribelle Margaret vi fossero altri attori più in linea con personaggi che avevano visto l'età sullo schermo avanzare di un paio di decenni. La grande protagonista resta la corona. Questo rebuilding nel cast sta anche a significare questo. Gli uomini e le donne passano, la corona no. Il simbolo conta più di ogni altra cosa, va oltre ogni attore e personaggio, reale o di fantasia. Ecco perchè rimpiazzare Claire Foy con il premio Oscar Olivia Colman, Matt Smith con Tobias Menzies e via discorrendo, non è stata una scelta azzardata, anzi è stata una bella sperimentazione che ha dato risultati oltre ogni aspettativa. In particolare Olivia Colman è riuscita in uno doppio lavoro eccezionale. La sua Elisabetta II non solo riesce a ricordare la vera regina d'Inghilterra ma ricorda nelle movenze e nelle microespressioni la sua giovane versione televisiva interpretata dalla meravigliosa Claire Foy. Incredibile il lavoro della Colman. Superba. Se Menzies riesce in qualche modo a far evolvere il suo Filippo non si può dire lo stesso del personaggio interpretato da Elena Bonhan Carter. Bravissima lei ma forse c'è troppa discontinuità fra la sua versione e quella vista nelle prime 2 stagioni. Differenze estetiche soprattutto ma anche un rompersi e piegarsi diverso rispetto alla sua giovane versione. Molto bene invece il principe Carlo interpretato da Ben Daniels.
The strengths of the TV series have remained intact in this third season. Each sequence seemed superb and as always the construction of new characters and the development of old ones seemed gradual and convincing. In the background the story of a decade as important as the one from 1960 to 1970. We experience it through the Aberfan tragedy, the economic recession, the moon landing, the consolidation of TV as a mass medium, Churchill's death and the rise by Wilson. As always elegant, as always effective. What instead seemed perhaps a bit too frayed was the story as a whole. Also this year every single episode has almost represented a story in itself, a small self-contained film that could live a life of its own. Compared to the first 2 years, however, the organic nature of the story has suffered too much. The episodes seemed too stand-alone, beautiful fillers that always added too little to the progress of the general plot (as long as we can talk about the plot in a story like that). Benefiting were the individual characters who managed to emerge with great strength in their fragility and fear but also in their growth or in some cases involution. The Crown is therefore confirmed as one of the best products of recent years. Ambitious and tenacious, perfect in its realization and in continuous evolution.
I punti di forza della serie tv sono rimasti intatti in questa terza stagione. Ogni sequenza è sembrata superba e come sempre la costruzione di personaggi nuovi e lo sviluppo di quelli vecchi è sembrata graduale e convincente. Sullo sfondo il racconto di un decennio importante come quello che va dal 1960 al 1970. Lo viviamo attraverso la tragedia di Aberfan, la recessione economica, l'allunaggio, il consolidamento della tv come medium di massa, la morte di Churchill e l'ascesa di Wilson. Come sempre elegante, come sempre efficace. Quello che è invece sembrato forse un pò troppo sfilacciato è stato il racconto nel suo complesso. Anche quest'anno ogni singolo episodio ha rappresentato quasi una storia a se, un piccolo film autoconclusivo che riusciva a vivere di vita propria. Rispetto alle prime 2 annate però l'organicità del racconto ne ha risentito troppo. Gli episodi sono sembrati troppo stand alone, dei bellissimi filler che aggiungevano sempre troppo poco all'avanzamento della trama generale (sempre che di trama si possa parlare in un racconto del genere). A beneficiarne sono stati i singoli personaggi che sono riusciti ad emergere con grande forza nelle loro fragilità e paure ma anche nella loro crescita o in alcuni casi involuzione. The Crown si conferma, dunque, come uno dei prodotti migliori degli ultimi anni. Ambizioso e tenace, perfetto nella sua realizzazione ed in continua evoluzione.
