When Hulu launched the first season of The Handmaid's Tale 3 years ago, the success came almost unexpectedly and in gigantic proportions. The themes that were dealt with in the Trump era were too topical. Denial of liberty, extremism, bigotry and territoriality made the dystopic series a mirror of the times. The second season had continued along the same lines, however, without arousing the same impetus and not managing to be enough and just as nosy with respect to current events. The third season had to mark a change of pace or would have run the risk of "Game of Thrones" or losing the compass when the series would overtake the books in terms of storytelling. A few days ago the third season ended and it's time to take stock. There is a premise to be made. The first part of the third season has shown atavistic defects of the series. June seemed too often lucky and too free compared to what Galaad could allow. Some choices were poorly constructed and some characters developed too superficially. By mid-season the worry that everything would end up in a giant hole in the water was enormous. Fortunately the last 4-5 episodes have given back to The Handmaid's Tale a strength and vigor that reminded us of the good times of the first season. The final triptych, in particular, was exhilarating. We breathed once again the epic and the task that had characterized the first season. June finally took the revolt into her own hands, becoming the architect of her own destiny, aware of her own strength and therefore no longer the subject-object of lucky events that allowed her to avoid the gallows at every episode. Eleanor's death is up to June as Gale's death is up to Jesse Pinkman or as Jane's death is up to Walter White wanting to make a comparison between the series and Breaking Bad, queen of all the series. This turning point definitively marked June's story, hardened her character, becoming the character's turning point. The revolt began, bringing the first victories. From the arrest of Waterford, to the killing of a commander, to the release of dozens of children. It could only be the beginning, but it was enough to give a necessary acceleration to the events, more and more shocking and important. The fourth season has already been announced and it is to be expected that there will be an ever-increasing clash between the forces on the field with a very likely enlargement to include the nations around Galaad, now called upon to move on to the attack to free women and children from the cruelty of the former American order. The powerful finale allowed the third season to pass the exam that had appeared at the beginning of the season, making us forget the too many mistakes of the first phase of this year and renewing the curiosity and above all the desire to see other seasons of this wonderful series.
Quando 3 anni fa Hulu lanciò la prima stagione di The Handmaid's Tale il successo arrivò quasi inaspettato ed in proporzioni gigantesche. Troppo attuali i temi che, in epoca Trump, venivano affrontati. Negazione delle libertà, estremismo, bigottismo e territorialità facevano della serie distopica uno specchio dei tempi. La seconda stagione aveva proseguito sulla stessa linea tuttavia senza suscitare lo stesso impeto e non riuscendo ad essere abbastanza ed altrettanto ficcante rispetto all'attualità. La terza stagione doveva segnare un cambio di passo o avrebbe corso il rischio "Game of Thrones" ovvero di perdere la bussola nel momento in cui la serie avrebbe superato i libri in quanto a narrazione. Da pochi giorni si è conclusa la terza stagione ed è tempo di bilanci. C'è da fare una premessa. La prima parte della terza stagione ha evidenziato difetti atavici della serie. June è sembrata troppo spesso fortunata e troppo libera rispetto a quanto Galaad potesse permettere. Alcune scelte sono state costruite male e alcuni personaggi sviluppati troppo superficialmente. A metà stagione la preoccupazione che tutto finisse in un gigantesco buco nell'acqua era enorme. Fortunatamente gli ultimi 4-5 episodi hanno restituito a The Handmaid's Tale una forza ed un vigore che ci hanno fatto ricordare i bei tempi della prima stagione. Il trittico finale, in particolare, è stato esaltante. Abbiamo nuovamente respirato l'epicità e l'incombenza che avevano caratterizzato la prima stagione. June ha finalmente preso in mano la rivolta, divenendo artefice del proprio destino, consapevole della propria forza e dunque non più soggetto-oggetto di eventi fortunati che le consentivano di evitare la forca ad ogni episodio. La morte di Eleanor sta a June come quella di Gale sta a Jesse Pinkman o come quella di Jane sta a Walter White volendo fare un raffronto fra la serie e Breaking Bad, regina di tutte le serie. Questo punto di svolta ha segnato definitivamente la storia di June, ne ha temprato il carattere, divenendo il turning point del personaggio. La rivolta è iniziata, portando le prime vittorie. Dall'arresto dei Waterford, all'uccisione di un comandante, alla liberazione di decine di bambini. Potrebbe essere solo l'inizio ma tanto è bastato per dare una doverosa accelerata agli eventi, sempre più sconvolgenti e importanti. La quarta stagione è stata già annunciata e sarà lecito attendersi uno scontro sempre più ampio tra le forze in campo con un allargamento molto probabile alle nazioni intorno a Galaad, chiamate ora a passare all'attacco per liberare donne e bambini dalla crudeltà dell'ordine ex statunitense. Il finale poderoso ha permesso alla terza stagione di superare l'esame che si era presentato ad inizio stagione, facendo dimenticare i troppi errori della prima fase di quest'annata e rinnovando la curiosità e soprattutto la voglia di assistere ad altre stagioni di questa stupenda serie.
