He's always able to surprise This is Us. Even in the fourth season she managed to pull one rabbit out of the hat after another, overturning our expectations continuously and playing on our (apparent) certainties. Think about when, about ten episodes ago, we found out that Kevin and Randall would stop talking to each other, trusting each other, in the near future. In the following episodes we imagined several times that we were facing the breaking point, without ever finding it. Let's think about how many times the 2 could have clashed on the theme "Rebecca". At least 5 if we count them and to our surprise, despite the differences they never did. This reinforces the thesis that the 2 despite everything they love each other very much and have enormous affection for each other. It took a lot of small fights for them, a lot of episodes for us, a lot of borderline situations and a big lie, a big unspoken to make everything explode definitively. Explosion that could only come in the very last episode of the season that really could have been a final series more than a final season. Dan Fogelman was very good at postponing the irresistible and with a masterstroke he places this moment in the final and manages to enrich it with 2 consequent moments that for different reasons hurt even more. The quarrel that will lead the 2 to break their bond is not healable, it is deep, visceral, it starts from afar. The fracture is irreparable. It's a painful moment for Kevin, it's a painful moment for Randall, it's a painful moment for us who are undaunted at the end of a bond that we also felt a little bit ours, indestructible. The second consequence we see in a very distant future that tells us that yes, Randall was right about Rebecca, but no, he and Kevin haven't been in contact for a very long time. It's a scene that hurts us twice as much because it makes us realize how much they both sacrificed for Rebecca's sake and for their own hurt pride. And it almost overshadows the discovery that little Jack will have a sister, adopted, who in the future will hold his hand and accompany him in his most important steps. Thus ends a fabulous fourth season that, willingly or not, manages to renew itself slightly without losing a minimum of identity. Goodbye to the fifth season!
E' capace sempre di sorprendere This is Us. Anche nella quarta stagione è riuscita a tirare fuori dal cilindro un coniglio dopo l'altro, ribaltando le nostre aspettative continuamente e giocando sulle nostre (apparenti) certezze. Pensate a quando, oramai una decina di episodi fa, abbiamo scoperto che Kevin e Randall in un prossimo futuro avrebbero smesso di parlarsi, di fidarsi l'un dell'altro. Negli episodi successivi abbiamo immaginato svariate volte di trovarci di fronte al punto di rottura, senza mai trovarlo. Pensiamo a quante volte i 2 si sarebbero potuti scontrare sul tema "Rebecca". Almeno 5 se le contiamo e con nostra sorpresa, nonostante le divergenze non lo hanno mai fatto. Questo a rafforzare la tesi secondo cui i 2 nonostante tutto si vogliano un grandissimo bene e nutrano un enorme affetto l'un per l'altro. Ci sono voluti tanti piccoli scontri per loro, tanti episodi per noi, tante situazioni limite ed una grande bugia, un grande non detto per far esplodere tutto definitivamente. Esplosione che non poteva che arrivare nell'ultimissimo episodio della stagione che davvero sarebbe potuto essere un series finale più che un season finale. Dan Fogelman è stato bravissimo a rimandare l'irrimandabile e con un colpo da maestro piazza questo momento nel finale e riesce ad arricchirlo con 2 momenti conseguenti che per motivi diversi fanno ancora più male. Il litigio che porterà i 2 a rompere il loro legame non è sanabile, è profondo, viscerale, parte da lontano. La frattura è irreparabile. E' un momento doloroso per Kevin, lo è per Randall, lo è per noi che assistiamo imperterriti alla fine di un legame che sentivamo un po anche nostro, indistruttibile. La seconda conseguenza la vediamo in un futuro molto lontano che ci dice che si, Randall aveva ragione su Rebecca, ma no, lui e Kevin non sono stati in contatto per tantissimo tempo. E' una scena che ci fa doppiamente male perchè ci fa capire quanto abbiano sacrificato entrambi per il bene di Rebecca e per il proprio orgoglio da sempre molto ferito. E passa quasi in secondo piano la scoperta che il piccolo Jack avrà una sorella, adottata, che in futuro gli tenderà la mano e lo accompagnerà nei suoi passi più importanti. Si conclude cosi una favolosa quarta stagione che volente o nolente riesce a rinnovarsi leggermente senza perdere un minimo di identità. Arrivederci alla quinta stagione!
