By the middle of the season we should have understood what Damon Lindelof has in mind for the most awaited series of 2019. Watchmen continues to travel on the very thin track that divides the comic strip from the original work. There is so much of the graphic novel from which it draws but there is also material coming from the imagination of the creator of The Leftovers. This fourth episode is no exception. The difficulty in reading each single episode is related to the presence of numerous easter eggs dissemninati along the way. From the Clark family to the book that the woman reads while waiting for her life to change forever, to the song that Angela and Laurie listen to in the car, to the Vietnamese garden of Lady Trieu and many others. Games and references very complicated but that give the perception of how Lindelof has mastered the material in his possession and how he is able to expand it to his liking. For the most avid fans of comics this represents an excellent piece that allows them to appreciate every moment of the TV series. At the same time the extraordinary originality and modernity of the story, allows the non-loyal comics to enjoy a wonderful, layered and rewarding show.
Giunti oramai a metà stagione dovremmo avere capito cosa Damon Lindelof abbia in mente per la serie più attesa del 2019. Watchmen continua a viaggiare sul sottilissimo binario che divide il fumetto dall'opera originale. C'è tanto della graphic novel da cui attinge ma c'è altrettanto materiale frutto della fantasia del creatore di The Leftovers. Questo quarto episodio non fa eccezione. La difficoltà nella lettura di ogni singolo episodio è legato alla presenza di numerosissimi easter egg dissemninati lungo il cammino. Dalla famiglia Clark al libro che la donna legge in attesa che la sua vita cambi per sempre, alla canzone che Angela e Laurie ascoltano in auto, al giardino vietnamita di Lady Trieu e tantissimi altri. Giochi e rimandi complicatissimi ma che danno la percezione di quanto Lindelof abbia padronanza del materiale in suo possesso e di quanto sia in grado di ampliarlo a suo piaceimento. Per i fan più accaniti del fumetto questo rappresenta un ottimo tassello che permette loro di apprezzare ogni momento della serie tv. Al tempo stesso la straordinaria originalità e contemporaneità del racconto, permette ai non affezionati del fumetto di godere di uno show stupendo, stratificato e appagante.
From the point of view of the plot of episode 4, there are many crucial events that as always seem to be decisive for the purposes of the great general story but certainly less fundamental in the short term. We continue to investigate characters like Angela and Laurie and everything that revolves around them. However, there are 3 characters that are outlined and told even better, albeit mysteriously as only Lindelof can.
From the first minutes we make the acquaintance of the calm and glacial Lady Trieu, a very rich woman behind the construction of the big clock that, a bit like Ozymandias would do, takes on the appearance of a God. a lot to do with Veidt. And the old Ozymandias has a primary role in this episode. It always seems marginal to the story yet it continues to be very interesting in its evolution. What are you thinking about? Where is it? On the moon? What do these fetuses represent? Why exterminate his "children"? What is your connection to Lady Trieu and Will? And just Will closes the episode, standing in the Lady's Vietnamese garden and sends us back to an important appointment. Within 3 days everyone will know what he did. What is it referring to? What terrible deeds will you have done? At the moment we are in the dark but we leave this weekly appointment with many questions and a renewed desire to follow the next episodes.
Dal punto di vista della trama dell'episodio 4, sono tanti gli avvenimenti cruciali che come sempre sembrano essere determinanti ai fini del grande racconto generale ma sicuramente meno fondamentali nel breve periodo. Continuiamo ad approfondire personaggi come Angela e Laurie e tutto ciò che ruota intorno a loro. Sono 3 però i personaggi che vengono delineati e raccontati ancora meglio, seppur misteriosamente come solo Lindelof sa fare.
Sin dai primi minuti facciamo la conoscenza della pacata e glaciale Lady Trieu, una donna ricchissima dietro la costruzione del grande orologio che, un po come farebbe Ozymandias, assume le sembianze di un Dio. Un Dio fabbricatore di bambini e manipolatore che alla fine scopriremo avere molto a che fare con Veidt. E proprio il vecchio Ozymandias ad avere un ruolo primario in questa puntata. Sembra sempre marginale al racconto eppure continua ad essere interessantissimo nella sua evoluzione. Cosa stare escogitando? Dove si trova? Sulla Luna? Quei feti cosa rappresentano? Perchè stermina i suoi "bambini"? Quale è il suo legame con Lady Trieu e Will? E proprio Will chiude l'episodio, in piedi, camminando nel giardino vietnamita della Lady e ci rimanda ad un importante appuntamento. Entro 3 giorni tutti sapranno cosa ha fatto. A cosa si riferisce? Quali atti tremendi avrà compiuto? Al momento ne siamo allo scuro ma usciamo da questo appuntamento settimanale con tante domande ed una rinnovata voglia di seguire i prossimi episodi.
