Perhaps it was legitimate to expect something more from "Widows", the latest work of Steve McQueen director who had grabbed the Oscar with his previous film "12 years slave".
The expectation was enormous because it was expected a great confirmation of the qualities of the African-American director that partly arrived and partly not.
Expectation made even greater by the number of actors who participated in this film with names like Liam Neeson and Viola Davis and the venerable Robert Duvall to enrich this film.
Expectation also linked to the change in style and setting compared to the previous film. No longer a historical and costumed story but an adrenaline-filled action movie with many twists and turns.
Thematically very distant from 12 years slave maybe "Widows" loses its challenge on the narrative field. It doesn't offer the viewer much food for thought but is content to entertain him, and nothing would be wrong if it had been directed by a less busy filmmaker than McQueen. So there's still a bit of bitterness in the mouth for a film that's still sumptuously direct and very enjoyable. A film that should therefore be seen and recommended but not praised and remembered for this.
Watching the movie and the cast, you'd think that McQueen wanted to ride the long wave of the @metoo phenomenon, deploying an all-female main cast that, in a sui generis context, must prove to be able to escape from an intricate and apparently dead-end situation. An attempt to make heroines of normal women, without a criminal experience but who, out of criminal necessity, will have to become so.
There is a twisted feminism behind all this, a very forced feminism that makes the whole film lose its power and ends up making it very uninteresting at the contemporary level and very enjoyable from the point of view of action and thriller.
Nothing to say, then, but a small applause to the increasingly extraordinary Viola Davis, by now a real golden goose who manages to transform into gold every part she played.
Forse era lecito aspettarsi qualcosa di più da "Widows", ultima fatica di Steve McQueen regista che aveva agguantato l'Oscar con il suo film precedente "12 anni schiavo".
L'attesa era enorme perchè ci si attendeva una grossa conferma delle qualità del regista afroamericano che in parte è arrivata ed in parte no.
Attesa resa ancora più grande dal novero di attori che hanno partecipato a questa pellicola con nomi come Liam Neeson e Viola Davis ed il venerando Robert Duvall ad arricchire di capacità questo film.
Attesa legata anche al cambio di stile e ambientazione rispetto al film precedente. Non più un racconto storico e in costume ma un action movie adrenalinico e dai tanti colpi di scena.
Tematicamente lontanissimo da 12 anni schiavo forse "Widows" perde la sua sfida proprio sul terreno narrativo. Non riesce ad offrire allo spettatore grandi spunti di riflessione ma si accontenta di intrattenerlo, e nulla ci sarebbe di male se a dirigerlo fosse stato un cineasta meno impegnato di McQueen. Resta dunque un pò di amaro in bocca per un film comunque sontuosamente diretto e piacevolissimo. Un film che dunque va visto e consigliato ma non per questo elogiato e ricordato.
A guardare il film e il cast vien da pensare che McQueen abbia voluto cavalcare l'onda lunga del fenomeno @metoo, dispiegando un cast principale tutto al femminile che in un contesto sui generis deve dimostrarsi abile a fuoriuscire da una situazione intricata e apparentemente senza uscita. Un tentativo di rendere eroine delle donne normali, senza un vissuto criminale ma che per necessità criminali dovranno diventarlo.
C'è un contorto femminismo dietro tutto questo, un femminismo molto forzato che appunto fa perdere di potenza a tutto il film finendo per renderlo molto poco interessante a livello di lettura della contemporaneità e molto godibile dal punto di vista dell'azione e del thriller.
Nulla da dire dunque se non un piccolo plauso alla sempre più straordinaria Viola Davis oramai vera gallina dalle uova d'oro che riesce a trasformare in oro ogni parte da lei recitata.
