I have been getting back into new content recently and some old after a couple of rough months, I hope this is over and now I can adapt, my point is that Dope Thief (2025) never made my radar, if it wasn't because of all the news Severance made all around Youtube once it finish I wouldn't be looking for whats playing on AppleTV+ at least not during this times that I'm catching up to a lot of other series. First two episodes release at once and when episode 3 hit I had a blast watching all three episodes on the same night, got to say I'm hooked on this series that is very creative but basic at the same time, very simple, just look at the name Dope Thief, straight to the point. At the same time the series doesn't complicate itself with multiple story lines or characters, the focus point is just two actors like Batman and Robin on the streets of Philadelphia where two lifelong friends have created a dangerous hustle that's about to blow up in their faces.

Rottentomatoes Rating
Source The chemistry between Brian Tyree Henry and Wagner Moura is incredible from the very first scene, making their characters' friendship feel alive, which is crucial for a story that hinges on their bond. The first episode sets up a perfect introduction to this world of fake DEA agents, drug dealers and the inevitable fallout when things go wrong. There is nothing groundbreaking from this series, everything around it is very simple but how it handles the aftermath of a heist that was setup to go wrong since the very beginning but greed got in the way, focusing less on the thrill of the crime and more on the chaos that follows when you steal from the wrong people. The Philadelphia environment comes in clutch, from the accents to the visuals that remind you where you are, right on the streets when others are cooking and dealing, creating an atmosphere that feels dangerous at all times without knowing who to trust and when you going to get jump. As the story unfolds across these first three episodes we see Ray and Manny desperately trying to stay alive while dealing with their own personal demons, making the series the perfect balance between intense drama with unexpected moments of humor.

The show centers around Ray; role played by Brian Tyree Henry and Manny; played by Wagner Moura, both of them perfectly known from movies and TV series. t two childhood friends who have developed a scheme where they pose as DEA agents to rob small time drug dealers, a hustle that's worked well for them until they decide to expand their territory. The first episode "Jolly Ranchers" introduces us to their operation showing how they have ""perfected"" their act down to the badges and attitude, but things quickly spiral out of control when they bring in a third person, Rick who is an shady ex convict who Ray knew from prison. There is a big contrast between perfection to then bring in an outsider who from the very first minute look as the weak link. Rick leads them to a meth lab outside their usual territory and despite performing their fake DEA routine, the dealers don't buy it and start shooting forcing Ray and Manny to escape with all the money and drugs they can carry, everything wrong but you could see it happening from a mile away when Ray gave Rick a gun and then he was "practicing" his part of the act.

Source Ray and Manny end up with a ton of cash close to half milli and a bunch of product they were sure it was some type of drug and not shampoo as the bottle said, setting up the central conflict that drives the rest of the season, basically Ray and Manny running away from a real drug lord and not the kids they were use to rob. The second episode, titled "Bat Out of Hell," follows Ray and Manny as they go into hiding trying to figure out who revealed their identities to the cartel while also attempting to protect their loved ones, there is also this fixation of Ray on trying to figure out from the start who is after them instead of just going away now that they have enough cash. We start to get some quick scenes from Ray's past through monochrome flashbacks, I love how the production manage to mix color tones through the series, this flashbacks reveal his complicated relationship with his father Bart; played by Ving Rhames and his unofficial adoptive mother Theresa; played by Kate Mulgrew. By the third episode, "Run, Die, or Replace," things have escalated even further as the cartel keeps getting closer with Ray searching for Manny who has gone into hiding, leading to some tense moments and unexpected situations that kept me wanting to know what was next, I had my finger on the forward button getting desperate. The show excels at creating a sense of mounting danger while also finding room for character development, having few characters gives the series enough room to keep the pace and development and even some humor during the chaos, particularly in the interactions between Ray and Manny, its almost all jokes for them until things get serious and as they start doing more research on the cartel they find out its a biker gang who is after them and have to defend themself in one of their fake DEA raids, killing some of this bikers and we start to see probably the same evolution of good people on the wrong business who start changing as they keep taking one bad decision after another although most of them are in self defense.

Source I decided to make this post mostly to give an overview of what the series is about but also talking about each episode since I do want to keep covering it episode by episode but this two or even three episode release series makes it hard to keep up the pace from the start, I'm a one man army here, cant make three reviews on the same day, so I'm try to focus on the most shocking moments too. It is the case of episode three where things start to go wild, its here where the bikers who I think are hired by the drug lord, start to make move and go aver Ray friends and love ones. The first one to fall victim was Malik, a guy who own a pawn shop and was friends with Ray and Manny, I saw a victim because he is the first one to get killed while the bikers are after Ray and Manny, same goes for Ray dad who is in jail and got stabbed by someone inside. In the case of his dad is even worst because he is against the clock, while Ray's step mom is trying to get Bart out of jail the drug lord is targeting him to squeeze Ray, problem is that it seems it was his Bart who talk too much to the wrong person inside jail about Ray's operation on the outside.

There is one scene that was so intense where Ray goes to jail with his stepmother Theresa to visit Bart who got stabbed, but while he was having a chat with Michelle; Bart's lawyer, they found themself with bikers all over the place after him who didn't pull the trigger because the bar was full of police. Ray did everything he had to inside jail even talk to Bart again to find the parking lot full of bikers only to get raid by FEDs and taking all the bikers out of his way.

In the middle of all the chaos the series pull the hand break hard, dropping happy moments that are weird and bizarre, still funny, it is the case when Ray was looking for Manny and found him at his own apartment in his room, then take it to his girlfriend Sherry trying to explain her whats going on but facing that she refuse to belief them Ray throws a smoke bomb making Manny propose to Sherry, to end the episode with Malik's head on a box send to Ray. The way this series is so basic is probably its flaw too because how this "drug lord" knew Ray and Manny were going to be at Sherry's place? it makes no sense same as some other situations within the series.

This repetitive silly moments where both Ray and Manny get out of this kind of situations without a scratch might get old real quick, but episode 3 gave them another chance at the same time complicating things because that lab they busted had some real DEA under cover and now they are after Ray on a real DEA investigation.

In conclusion Dope Thief's first three episodes have set up a crime drama that feels both familiar in its genre trappings and fresh in its execution. The show's greatest strength fully depends the performances of its two leads, with Brian Tyree Henry and Wagner Moura creating a believable friendship that is the core to the chaotic narrative. I like how the series gave us a taste first of what they were after, as Ray refer to themself trimming the extra dope money from the streets but by chance they step with the mother load at that meth lab. As the season progresses, I'm curious to see how Ray and Manny will deal with the cartel's escalating threats and whether their friendship will survive the pressure and if their souls too, because they now facing real danger that already got them to kill others, brings me to mind too who is the first of their love ones to be hurt, Malik was just a friend from around. I got to give this series an 8/10 at minimum, but the fact that there are some plot holes and it falls into silly situations without much context or explanation prevents me from giving it a higher score, its not a too elaborated story but for sure an intense and fun one.
