Review by @soldierofdreams · 1502d · of Respect

Life is curious, why do I say it? Sometimes looking for a path we find another, hasn't it happened to you? Lately, in many of my social networks I have seen opinions and criticisms about the movie Elvis, the film inspired by a singer who, although he is somewhat unknown to me, I must admit that I am very curious about some aspects that I will not mention here. So, as I was saying, destiny takes us to unexplored corners, perhaps as a message or an anecdote. For me it is impossible to find an answer to the behavior of the universe, however, I am glad that it brings me closer to fantastic things, and this time it bordered me to the confines of Respect, a film where the “soul rhythm” shines under the voice of a fantastic star.

Yes, I was going to see Elvis and I ended up watching a completely different movie, although with something in common: the life of a musical artist. The reason at first was Jazz, of course. This has become one of my favorite musical genres when it comes to writing literature. And although I don't have a favorite Jazz singer (I just listen to random songs, XD) I am fascinated by any musical note permeated with the American southern rhythm. However, it was not until I saw Respect that I discovered the Soul rhythm and that I have confused it with Jazz. LOL. But leaving aside the musical mess of my confusion, I decided to share my impressions of this film of dreams, ambitions and voices of freedom... inspired, of course, by the portrait of a wonderful woman.

The racial history of the United States of America is no secret to any of us: conflicts here and there for the same equal rights whose primary objective is to overcome the stigma of skin color. In this environment, two different cultures contrast, and in it, the history of African-American struggle. Respect is a feature film that, although it does not go to the bottom of these conflicting themes, materializes them in the life of a woman whose main dream, in addition to success, is independence. I am speaking, of course, of Aretha Franklin.

She is a southerner, born into a Christian family where the man is the representative figure. Aretha is talented, her voice is earth shaking! But she suffers from her parents' conflict and from what, as a blow of fate, she has unfortunately had to experience in the shadows. She never had an identity of her own, she couldn't decide or choose, only listen to what others wanted for her career. Respect is a message made into a film, a filmographic book of other people's aspirations, entangled in the leg of a girl who only wants to shine with her own light.

Respect is a bibliographical feature film, a tribute, perhaps, to one of the most talented African-American women in the history of the United States. Part of Aretha's story is, in essence, her own musical life: conflicts and addictions, fears and frustrations, but above all the strength of conviction. At least for me, the film portrays the struggle of a woman who, after living to hear, now has to live to be heard. No decision that is fostered in our well-being can be bad, don't you think? Aretha is a worthy example of it.

Respect manages to be that hook for a viewer in need of inspiration from dreams and personal struggles. Although it is not a motivational film, Aretha's own life becomes the fundamental reason for her independence of thought, for the cry of the voices that want to find their own path and therefore the indisputable Hit of her purposes. The figure of the woman shines in a singer who fights for her emaciation of those who have imprisoned her in pain and impotence, even in solitude… loneliness is a terrible enemy!

Respect subtly touches on racial and religious issues, that is, although the protagonist experiences them first hand, the film only uses them as reference points. What does shine for us is, of course, the Soul rhythm; magic of an imposing voice against a world that, putting aside the stigma of the races, adores her with its heart. There is a harmonious mix in the musical style, only Respect captivates us with its own beauty. Dialogues and music, music and dialogues... and as a point of incision: hope.

And what about the characters?

IMG_20220825_184654.jpg Source: Imdb

While watching the film I identified some faces, among them, that of Forest Whitaker, the same actor who managed to captivate me in Panic Room. Here he plays an honorable but nosy family man, I say this because of his treatment of Aretha, the undisputed protagonist of this work. This time Forest has an overprotective character, perhaps tortured by fear of the independence of his daughters and the previous history with his wife. He was not my favorite, at least at the beginning of the matter. Although as a father (I'm not a father yet, XD) I could understand him, he only wished the best for Aretha! Only in her unjustifiable way.

Jennifer Hudson is the actress who personifies our majestic singer Aretha Franklin. Her voice is undoubtedly perfect to honor the soul beat star. A silent and reasonable woman to a certain extent, whose Achilles curtain is debated in a past of darkness and nightmare. moldable? Perhaps the movie shows us that no one can be moldable forever, and for a show of a button there's Aretha. She won my heart, and also her song that, to trigger the blatant direction of the film, bears the name of Respect. If you manage to see this film, I invite you to analyze the meaning of its lyrics, you will understand much of the context in the film. ;-)

Marlon Wayans is the actor I least expected in this film, I even told myself that it wasn't him while watching the film. I'm not used to seeing comedians playing very, very deep dramatic characters, and well, his appearance made noise in my head until the film was over. I think I saw it as somewhat misplaced in the personification of her, but, I will not deny it, at least I tolerated her interpretation as Ted White, the rebel behind Aretha, and the one who leads her to define her own voice as a woman and singer.

Is Respect a feature film worthy of Aretha Franklin?

20220825_185419_567.jpg Source: Imdb

I know that no bibliographic film can be 100% faithful to the portrait of the artist portrayed. Comments more or comments less, cinema is cinema, and above all (at least according to me) the most important thing is to reach the insatiable heart of a viewer hungry for something more than cheap and indifferent entertainment. Respect is not a perfect feature film, what is perfect in this world? However, I applaud the idea of honoring an admirable woman in every way. Perhaps the matter lacked spark, and even so, I'm happy to enjoy the life of Aretha Franklin, who, if it weren't for this film, I would never have found out about her existence.
