Greetings, dear Movies & Tv Shows community. As I had promised, I'm back with strength and to see me more often talking about the subject I'm most passionate about. Today I bring you a wonderful movie that I had on my list for a long time and I could not give it more time. It is MINARI.

The plot is very simple and quite well known, but still, with the simplicity of the subject it is complicated to start talking about it from any point of view. I will simply start at the beginning and talk about what it is about. We all know, from our perspective as Latinos, the stories of migration to the United States, it is not an unknown topic to us, and even less so in these times. Many years ago, Venezuelans who had opportunities to study abroad, returned once they finished their studies. Those were other times, and one of the main reasons why we could enter without a visa to many countries, as I have already told you, the story is different now.
However, that's not what this story is about, it's about a group of Korean migrants in the United States who want to change their story, like everyone else, they come in search of the "American Dream". The Yi family, headed by David and Monica Yi, along with their two children David and Anne, start a new life on a farm in Arkansas after leaving California. Once settled, very reluctantly Monica, who refused to live on the plains of Arkansas, far from civilization and with great concern, as little David suffers from a heart condition and was worried about being so far away from a hospital. Soon after Monica's mother arrives, straight from Korea, after years of separation and not knowing her grandchildren, she is a necessary character to help around the house despite how untypical this grandmother is.
The story begins to transcend at the moment when David is giving life to the farm, begins to look for water and to make things grow little by little, and not without inconveniences along the way that I will not name here. He is joined in the process by Paul, a very disturbed ex-soldier who fought in the Korean War and is a religious fanatic with his own church, but who enjoys some sympathy (at least from me).
Why Minari?
When the grandmother arrives from Korea, she brings with her a silver called Minari, which is a kind of Asian coriander with which they flavor all these delicious Korean foods. They have a wonderful meaning, because it is at the beginning, they have a short period of departure, and when reborn it grows stronger. This is an incredible fact and has great significance for the film.
Something that really caught my attention and touched my soul was the scene where the grandmother starts to hand out the gifts, kilos of Asian spices, and Monica starts to cry. I haven't traveled out of the country yet, but all my relatives are abroad, and they always miss those flavors. I even sent some sweet chili bell pepper seeds to my sister-in-law on a trip abroad because she was suffering without the characteristic flavor that is the basis of Venezuelan food. So when I saw that scene, I saw reflected my family and friends who miss their flavors.
That thirst to start building something is admirable, David's plan was to plant Korean vegetables. That rootedness to their roots and bringing the flavors back to the land that now accepts them is something that every migrant does. I know it's not just this family's story, and that any migrant family would be drawn to this story and put themselves in their shoes no matter what country of origin they come from.
Technical data
This film directed and written by Lee Isaac Chung, a director son of Korean migrants, little known, but undoubtedly, has earned a place of honor by bringing us this wonderful story released in 2020 and was nominated in all the awards of 2021, including best picture, original screenplay, best supporting actress, among others.
The soundtrack and cinematography are a delight. Hacen un retrato sonoro de la vida en el campo con unas tomas espectaculares a la sencillez de la vida de campo. La paleta de colores llena entre el verde, el marrón, los grises y el azul, los colores de la tierra. Algo que se jugaron y que a mí me pareció maravilloso, es que la película está en Coreano, los niños hablan inglés, como todos los niños que nacen en países diferentes al de los padres, pero esto me pareció una jugada magnífica, porque muestra como son las cosas en realidad.
Actors
With such a small cast, the performances are as noticeable as they are remarkable. Starting with David, played by Steven Yeun, who we know for playing the most beloved character in the entire series of The Walking Dead, Glenn. Here we see something completely different from the one who started out as a young actor. Steven plays a family man who dreams of growing up in America, he bets all the savings he has earned on building on this farm. The psychology of the character is of this loving but strict father with his children, who decides to discipline his children the way he was taught. Esta actuación le valió una nominación al Óscar. Honestly, there were times when I hated it, mostly because of that blessed "you do what I say here" theme.

We have Monica, played by Yeri Han, who is a prominent actress in South Korea and who is entering the American market for the first time. With this character I remembered what my mother once said, that men will always have that dreamy spirit and tend to have their heads in the clouds and that they should always have someone by their side who is the anchor of the home, because while they are flitting around, important things always happen on earth and in this case it is Monica's duty to bring him ashore many times. She, like many women who have emigrated, has the great regret of not feeling happy with her husband's decision, he is in Arkansas against his will. I empathized with her a lot, because really, if I had been taken to a trailer in the middle of nowhere I would have also been very upset and would have been more unbearable than Monica was in this interpretation. I really thought she was an excellent character, she embodies a strong woman who loves and lives for her children.
The children... This duty that many have, where everything should be centered, and I believe that in this film they are the central axis, especially little David, who took my heart and took him with him. Tenderness personified by Alan Kim, as well as his unsurpassed performance, who at only 5 years old told everyone that he is in the acting world and is here to stay. He won a Critics' Choice Award for Best Young Actor, as well as being nominated for Best Supporting Actor at the BAFTA Awards, AT ONLY 5 YEARS OLD. Well deserved. Anne, played by Noel Cho, also struck me as a young actress with a lot of attitude.
I can't stop talking about the characters without first mentioning the jewel within this great movie: Youn Yuh-jung, who plays Grandma Soonja. The foul-mouthed, foul-mouthed, cookie-baking, men's underwear-wearing grandmother, newly arrived from Korea, is the most charismatic thing in this movie, and the one who brings color and happiness to it. I really enjoyed her character, from start to finish, and I think anyone who sees the movie will agree with me. If you want to see how an actress sweeps all the awards she was nominated for that year, that is, all of them. She swept all the supporting actress nominees that year and was on par with two veterans like Glenn Close and Olivia Colman, not that it was an easy year to win an Oscar.
Migration
I have not experienced migration in the flesh, but my maternal family has been migrants (my mother included), I know what they lack, what they need, what they need and what their dreams are. But there is someone particular in my family who has migrated twice, my grandmother came to Venezuela in the 50's with her siblings fleeing from Franco's madness, they arrived to the oil lands and soon began to create their dreams. Between them they set up a bakery and then a laundry, and like many Europeans who came looking for the American dream, they each managed to raise their families, missing the Spanish flavors, spices, meats and dishes. They arrived in strange lands and were able to emerge, each in their own way. My grandmother used to tell me how she found in the Asturian fields remains of cans and things that the Nazis had left behind when they passed through Asturias with their avalanche and left them without crops, because when they lost the war, and fled to other lands, they looked for a thousand ways to eat. She was a baby for those times, but the repercussions of those acts remained for many years. Three years ago she had to return because she could no longer support herself, and now she is a migrant within her own country, living in a small space, madly missing her big house where she can do whatever she wants....
Just as my grandmother migrated to America, because they did not see countries, they saw a whole continent full of opportunities, so did the Koreans after Korea was divided, they left looking for different directions to escape the madness, many of these Koreans came to California because it was the closest place from those latitudes of the world.
Whenever I see stories, read news or hear about which migrants left their country, it is because of the same thing, men of power who launch themselves into a senseless war, or take over countries, or do whatever they want with them. I will not put myself as a protagonist, because I think most of them have all gone through this at some point. They do not touch this point, only superficially. The important thing about this plot is what the migrants do to survive in the new lands and more importantly, that these stories are always successful when family is paramount.

Saludos, querida comunidad de Movies & Tv Shows. Cómo les había prometido, he vuelto con fuerzas y a verme más seguido hablando del tema que más me apasiona. Hoy les traigo una película maravillosa que tenía en mi lista desde hace mucho tiempo y a la que no podía darle más largas. Se trata de MINARI.
La trama es muy sencilla y bastante conocida, pero aun así, con la sencillez del tema es complicado empezar a hablar de esto desde cualquier punto de vista. Simplemente, empezaré por el principio y hablaré de lo que trata. Todos conocemos, desde nuestra perspectiva como latinos, las historias de migración a los Estados Unidos, no es un tema desconocido para nosotros, y menos en estos tiempos. Hace muchos años, los venezolanos que tenían oportunidades de estudiar en el exterior, volvían una vez terminados sus estudios. Eran otras épocas, y una de las principales razones por la que podíamos entrar sin visa a muchos países, como ya se los dije, la historia ahora es diferente.
Sin embargo, de esto no se trata esta historia, se trata de un grupo de migrantes coreanos en los Estados Unidos que quieren cambiar su historia, como todos, llegan en busca del "Sueño americano". La familia Yi, encabezada por David y Mónica Yi, junto a sus dos hijos David y Anne, empiezan una nueva vida en una granja de Arkansas tras dejar California. Una vez instalados, muy a regañadientes de Mónica, quien se negaba a vivir en las llanuras de Arkansas, lejos de la civilización y con suma preocupación, pues el pequeño David sufre de una enfermedad cardiaca y le preocupaba estar tan lejos de un hospital. Poco tiempo después llega la madre de Mónica, directo de Corea, tras años de separación y sin conocer a sus nietos, es un personaje necesario para ayudar en la casa a pesar de lo poco típica que es esta abuela.
La historia empieza a trascender en el momento en que David le va dando vida a la granja, empieza a buscar agua y a hacer crecer cosas poco a poco, y no sin inconvenientes en el camino que no nombraré acá. Se le une en el proceso Paul, un ex soldado muy trastornado quien luchó en la guerra de Corea y es un fanático religioso con su propia iglesia, pero que goza de cierta simpatía (al menos de mi parte).
¿Por qué Minari?
Al llegar la abuela de corea, trae con ella una plata llamada Minari, que es una especie de cilantro asiático con el que aromatizan todas estas deliciosas comidas coreanas. Tienen un significado maravilloso, porque está a principio, tienen un corto periodo de ida, y al renacer crece más fuerte. Este es un dato increíble y tiene gran trascendencia para la película.
Algo que me llamó mucho la atención y que me llegó alma, fue la escena en que la abuela empieza a repartir los regalos, kilos de especies asiáticas y Mónica empieza a llorar. Yo aún no he viajado fuera del país, pero todos mis familiares están fuera, y siempre extrañan esos sabores. Incluso, en un viaje que hizo un familiar al exterior, le envié unas semillas de ají dulce a mi cuñada porque sufría sin el sabor característico que es la base de la comida venezolana. Así que al ver esa escena, vi reflejados a mis familiares y amigos que extrañan sus sabores.
Esa sed de empezar a construir algo es admirable, el plan de David era sembrar vegetales coreanos. Ese arraigo a sus raíces y de traer los sabores a la tierra que ahora los acepta es algo que hace cada migrante. Yo sé que no es solo la historia de esta familia, y que cualquier familia de migrantes se sentiría atraído por esta historia y se pondría en sus zapatos sin importar el país de origen del que vienen.
Datos técnicos
Esta película dirigida y escrita por Lee Isaac Chung, un director hijo de migrantes coreanos, poco conocido, pero que sin duda, se ha ganado un lugar de honor al traernos esta maravillosa historia estrenada en el 2020 y que estuvo nominada en todas las premiaciones del 2021, incluida mejor película, guion original, mejor actriz de reparto, entre otras.

Los actores
Al tener un cast tan pequeño, las actuaciones son tan notorias como remarcables. Empezando por David, encarnado por Steven Yeun, a quien conocemos por encarnar al personaje más querido de toda la serie de The Walking Dead, Glenn. Aquí vemos algo completamente distinto a quien comenzó como un joven actor. Steven interpreta a un padre de familia que sueña con crecer en Estados Unidos, aposta todos los ahorros que ha ganado en construir en esta granja. La psicología del personaje es de este padre cariñoso pero estricto con sus hijos, que decide disciplinar a sus hijos de la manera en que lo enseñaron a él. Esta actuación le valió una nominación al Óscar. Sinceramente, hubo momentos en que lo odié, sobre todo por ese bendito tema de "aquí se hace lo que yo digo".
Tenemos a Mónica, interpretada por Yeri Han, quien es una prominente actriz en Corea del Sur y que incursiona por primera vez en el mercado americano. Con este personaje recordé eso que alguna vez dijo mi madre, que los hombres siempre van a tener ese espíritu soñador y suelen estar con la cabeza en las nubes y que siempre deben tener a su lado a alguien que sea el ancla del hogar, porque mientras ellos están revoloteando, siempre ocurren cosas importantes en la tierra y en este caso es el deber de Mónica traerlo a tierra muchas veces. Ella, al igual que muchas mujeres que han emigrado, tiene el gran pesar de no sentirse feliz con la decisión de su esposo, está en Arkansas en contra de su voluntad. Empaticé mucho con ella, porque de verdad que si a mí me hubieran llevado a un tráiler en el medio de la nada también me habría molestado muchísimo y estaría más insoportable de lo que estuvo Mónica en esta interpretación. de verdad que me pareció un excelente personaje, personifica a una mujer fuerte que adora y vive por sus hijos.
Los hijos... Este deber que tienen muchos, en dónde debe centrarse todo, y creo que en esta película son el eje central, sobre todo el pequeño David, quien tomó mi corazón y se le llevó con él. La ternura personificada por Alan Kim, al igual que su insuperable interpretación, que con solo con 5 años de edad le dijo a todo el mundo que está en el mundo de la actuación y llegó para quedarse. Se ganó un Critics' Choice Award por mejor actor Joven, así como también fue nominado a mejor actor de reparto en los BAFTA Awards, CON SOLO 5 AÑOS. Muy merecido. Anne, interpretada por Noel Cho, también me pareció una actriz joven con mucha actitud.
No puedo dejar de hablar de los personajes sin antes mencionar a la joya dentro de esta gran película: Youn Yuh-jung, quien interpreta a la abuela Soonja. La abuela recién llegada de Corea, mal hablada, que no sabe hacer galletas y que usa ropa interior de hombres, es lo más carismático de esta película, y quien le aporta el color y la felicidad. Me disfruté mucho su personaje, de principio a fin, y creo que cualquiera que vea la película estará de acuerdo conmigo. Si quieren ver como hace una actriz para arrasar con todos los premios al que estuvo nominada ese año, es decir, todos. Barrió con todas las nominadas a actriz de reparto de ese año y estuvo a la par de dos veteranas como lo son Glenn Close y Olivia Colman, no fue que era un año fácil para ganarse un Oscar.
La migración
No he vivido la migración en carne propia, pero mi familia materna ha sido migrante (mi madre incluida), sé cuáles son sus carencias, que les hace falta, que necesitan y cuáles son sus sueños. Pero hay alguien particular dentro de mi familia que ha migrado dos veces, mi abuela se vino a Venezuela en los años 50 junto a sus hermanos huyendo de la locura franquista, llegaron a tierras petroleras y pronto empezaron a crear sus sueños. Entre ellos montaron una panadería y luego una lavandería, y así como muchos europeos que llegaron buscando el sueño americano, lograron levantar cada uno a sus familias, extrañando los sabores españoles, sus especies, sus carnes y platillos. Llegaron a tierras extrañas y pudieron surgir, cada uno a su manera. Mi abuela me contaba de como encontraba en los campos asturianos restos de latas y cosas que habían dejado los nazis cuando pasaron con su avalancha por Asturias y los dejaron sin cosechas, porque al perder la guerra, y huyendo hacia otras tierras, buscaron las mil maneras de comer. Ella era una bebé para esos tiempos, pero la repercusión de esos actos quedó durante muchos años. Hace tres años le tocó regresarse porque ya no se podía mantener, y ahora es migrante dentro de su propio país, viviendo en un espacio pequeño, extrañando con locura su casa grande en donde puede hacer lo que quiera...
Así como mi abuela emigró a América, porque ellos no veían países, veían un continente entero lleno de oportunidades, así mismo lo hicieron los Coreanos luego de que Corea se dividiera, salieron buscando rumbos distintos para huir de la locura, muchos de estos coreanos llegaron a California porque era el sitio más cercano desde esas latitudes del mundo.
Siempre que veo historias, leo noticias o me entero de como cuáles migrantes salieron de su país, es por lo mismo, hombres de poder que se lanzan a una guerra sin sentido, o se apoderan de países, o hacen lo que quiera con estos. No me pondré como protagonista, porque creo que en su mayoría todos han pasado por esto en algún momento. Ellos no tocan este punto, solo superficialmente. Lo importante de esta trama es lo que hacen los migrantes para sobrevivir en las nuevas tierras y más importante aún, que estás historias siempre son exitosas cuando la familia es lo primordial.
