This musical comedy film takes you on a journey back in time, entertaining you and motivating you to face your fears. As it is a musical comedy, the story focuses on dancing. Musicals are not a genre that appeals to many, but films with a social message do. The latest version of Hairspray was released in 2007, which is the one I saw, and is a remake of the 1988 original.

Plot
The plot is based on the lives of Tracy and her best friend Penny, both teenagers and fans of a famous 1962 television programme, The Corny Collins Show, which holds weekly dance competitions and challenges in which the participants, mostly young white people of high social status and attractive appearance, gain popularity and enjoy fame. Breaking the standards of that era of racial segregation is the job of the protagonist, Tracy Turnblad, who, despite being overweight and poor, manages to win the admiration of the masses with her charisma, humility and talent for dancing.
Hairspray is a fresh, somewhat innocent and fantastical story that entertains the viewer, but with an underlying theme of racial struggle and breaking down barriers, it invites us to fight for our dreams, maintain our dignity and not be fooled by fleeting luxuries or deceptive popularity. Tracy, who becomes a star in the city of Baltimore, takes advantage of her fame and helps causes against racism, making sincere and genuine friends.

Opinion
One of the things I enjoy most about films from past decades is the costumes, hairstyles and make-up, which are beautiful and add something extra to the story. The highlight of the 1960s was the big, voluminous hairstyles with lots of hairspray, and I know that had to be highlighted in the film to give meaning to the title.
Hairspray features a cast of well-known actors such as: John Travolta, Nikki Blonsky, Zac Efron, Queen Latifah, among others, which is why I decided to watch this film, as I recognised some of them. This film is a classic of its genre that helps us understand what the past, show business, and television were like with humour.
It touches on sensitive issues such as racism, obesity, and bullying through comedy. In my opinion, this is a good strategy nowadays, as it is easier to educate subtly than directly, and it is a good idea to sow the seeds of empathy through cinema.
