It’s so nice to watch movies where you can relate to the story or find it familiar—even if it’s fiction—and that make you see life’s hardships from a different perspective. At least in the movies, you can laugh at the tragedies you see, knowing they aren’t real and they aren’t yours—and that’s when you think, “Maybe what’s happening to me isn’t as bad as it seems,” and a smile appears on your face.

The Night Delivery Man is a movie I watched last year, though it was released in 2023. It’s a blend of black comedy, crime suspense, drama, and thriller. It has everything you need to enjoy it. It’s an Arab film shot in Saudi Arabia with a distinctive atmosphere that makes it universal; the city, the streets, and the homes where it was filmed are just like those anywhere else in the world, and if it weren’t for the costumes the characters wear from time to time and their physical features, you wouldn’t recognize it as an Arab film.

Review

Fahad is a 30-year-old man who lives with his ailing father and his recently divorced sister, who has a young daughter. He comes from a lower socioeconomic background and lives under constant pressure from his customer service job, as well as from the need to earn more money for his father’s treatment and to contribute to household expenses, since his sister is shouldering most of the financial burden.

His situation worsens when he gets fired, receives a parking ticket, and decides to work nights as a delivery driver. Due to a misunderstanding, he is drawn into the world of theft and the sale of alcoholic and illicit beverages, creating a conflict between his values and his pressing financial needs.

Plot

Fahad is the protagonist, a lonely man who misses his ex but wants to fall in love again—only his financial situation won’t allow it. He lives under constant stress with an unbearable job where, no matter how hard he’s tried, he isn’t appreciated.

Just when he thought he’d be promoted, he was passed over for another employee who was less deserving—lighting the fuse on a ticking time bomb. He couldn’t take it anymore and exploded in an unimaginable way; his reaction was as normal and rational as it was over-the-top 🤭. As I watched the scene, I thought, “He’s crazy—how could he do that?” but I also identified with him, nodding and thinking, “That’s me.”

Jobless and facing a lawsuit, he decided to move forward without venting his frustration, but things got complicated—he was fined and had to turn to his cousin for help. At this point in the story, as a viewer, I felt relieved that someone could help him. He goes with his father to a job interview, falsifying part of his resume, and this part is very funny because of how his father behaves. She gets the job, but it was all a facade.

Anyway, Fahad’s problems seemed to be resolving themselves when she made a late-night delivery for work and received a large tip, posing as a trusted delivery person for a mafia client who later hired her to deliver illegal liquor. Since she had so many debts, the tip wasn’t enough, so she wanted to become an alcohol distributor, plunging herself into an unfamiliar world.

More and more misfortunes befell him, and his antics only made everything more complicated. Fahad suffered, fought, lost sleep, fell ill, fell in love, and was on the verge of madness, but he had a good heart—he just wanted to help and do good.

As a fun fact, this movie has different titles: in Spanish it’s “El entregador de la noche” and in Arabic “Mandoob,” which also means a night delivery person or messenger, but figuratively refers to someone who is in mourning or facing misfortune.

I feel that anyone could be Fahad—even if we have good values, in moments of desperation and crisis, we don’t know how badly we might go astray. The ending of this movie isn’t happy; it’s sad and abrupt, serving as a lesson that actions have consequences and that the loss of values never leads to anything good.
